Sam Burns makes feelings clear on Jon Rahm and Bryson DeChambeau returning to PGA Tour
Sam Burns believes the likes of Jon Rahm and Bryson DeChambeau could eventually return from LIV Golf and insists having the sport’s best players together would be “great for our game”.
Sam Burns has revealed he would welcome Jon Rahm, Bryson DeChambeau and other LIV Golf stars back to the PGA Tour if they decide to return.
Burns never seriously considered joining LIV Golf when the rival circuit launched in 2022, despite briefly being linked with a potential move.
The five-time PGA Tour winner instead remained committed to the circuit, but has consistently insisted he does not blame players who chose a different path.
Four years on, with LIV’s future uncertain, the 30-year-old American believes the return of some of the game’s biggest names would ultimately benefit golf.
Speaking exclusively to Fox News' OutKick, Burns said: “I think it’s best for the game of golf as a whole. And ultimately that’s what I want as a competitor. You want to play against the best players every week.”
Asked about the possibility of LIV players returning, Burns believes a pathway will eventually emerge.
“Ultimately, I think there will be a path back for those guys,” he said. “I don’t exactly know what it’ll look like.”
Burns has taken a notably measured approach to golf’s ongoing divide.
When rumours linked him with LIV in 2022, he quickly dismissed them and declared his full support for the PGA Tour.
However, he has never criticised players such as Rahm and DeChambeau for accepting lucrative LIV contracts.
“I don’t really fault anyone for the decision that they make to go play another tour,” Burns added.
Burns' comments come as uncertainty continues to surround the future of LIV Golf and the status of some of its superstar names.
Reports have surfaced this week that Rahm could be set for a shock depature after just three years on the league.
It is understood the Legion XIII captain is owed a nine-figure sum.
DeChambeau, however, would appear set on remaining on LIV Golf 2.0.
The Crushers GC captain labelled the media as "mafia" and hit out at a trio of reporters for "talking s**t" ahead of the league's final event of the season.
Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) will withdraw its financial backing of LIV after this week, although LIV CEO Scott O’Neil has said the league has secured a new lead investor, which is believed to be BC Partners.
Burns admits he is unsure what comes next.
“A lot of the LIV stuff is kind of up in the air right now,” he said.
“I don’t really know the future of it.”
But his preference is clear.
“I think ultimately you’ll see those guys back at some point,” Burns said.
“As a fan of golf as well, I think it’s great for our game.”
Burns heads into this week's BMW Championship in impressive form, ranked seventh in the world and sixth in the FedEx Cup standings after four top-five finishes in his last six starts.
