America's Chris Gotterup cracked the top 20 in the world rankings for the first time by winning the Sony Open

The 26-year-old fired a final-round six-under 64 at Waialae Country Club to reach 16-under par.

He won the PGA Tour's curtain-raiser by two shots from compatriot Ryan Gerard.

Overnight leader, Davis Riley, endured a tough day and had to settle for a share of sixth place alongside Taylor Pendrith, Lee Hodges, Harry Hall and Daniel Berger.

Scotland's Robert MacIntyre made a good start to his campaign and finished fourth on 12-under.

"I just felt like this week I was in a good frame of mind, just happy to be here," Gotterup said.

"I felt like I was in control of my brain, which is the most important thing. I drove it great and made some putts when it mattered."

Gotterup missed the cut here 12 months ago and fell to as low as 190 in the OWGR. He now has three PGA Tour titles to his name.

Riley had a good start in Hawaii, making birdie in two of his opening five holes. But then his bid ended in dramatic fashion.

He had consecutive three-putt bogeys from long range, and then followed with a wild drive into the trees left of the eighth fairway that led to double bogey.

He went from a two-shot lead to three shots behind and never caught up, closing with a 71.

Gotterup turned in three-under par and added more circles to his card on 12, 13 and 18 to pull clear.

"It was anyone's tournament," Gotterup said. "Then I made a couple nice putts and I saw a couple people drop back.

"I know Ryan played a great tournament and he tried to make a run at the end. Couple other guys played great and I just held them off."

Gotterup won the Scottish Open last year by outplaying Rory McIlroy and also won the Myrtle Beach Classic in his rookie season.

Elsewhere, 62-year-old Vijay Singh finished in a share of 40th. The multiple major champion has decided to take up his career money list exemption to play with the young guns in 2026.

The Sony Open was the first tournament of the PGA Tour's new season, played under the understanding that it could be the last time the North American circuit plays in Hawaii.

PGA Tour officials are reportedly exploring the idea of removing the Sony Open and The Sentry from the schedule
