Tiger Woods has announced plans to open a new sports bar in St Andrews with his business partner, singer/actor Justin Timberlake, but the news hasn't gone down well with local residents.

Plans presented to the Fife Council would see the new T Squared Social golf-themed sports bar replace the 1930s New Picture House Cinema on North Street, a stone's throw from the 1st tee at the Old Course.

The cinema is a building of cultural significance to the town, and the thought of it being replaced by a sports bar has seemingly hit a nerve with some locals.

Speaking to The Courier, St Andrews community council member Neil Dobson said:

"What's next, Trump buying the West Sands for a hotel? I find this very disrespectful and a bit cheeky, to be honest.
"This town has been very good to Tiger Woods and this is not the way to repay residents. St Andrews is unique and that building is iconic. An American bar is completely out of keeping."

St Andrews local Chris Main shared his fellow resident's concerns. Speaking to Bunkered, he added:

"St Andrews is unique and that building is iconic. An American bar is completely out of keeping."
"It's astonishing a university town loses its cinema to a multi-millionaire celebrity vanity project. St Andrews has had a cinema here since the 1930s. My mother and father courted there.
"It's one of the few independent cinemas left in Scotland."

T Squared Social St Andrews is set to be Woods and Timberlake's second bar under the same name after the pair launched the first T Squared Social in Manhattan last month.

St Andrews holds a special place in Woods' heart, having won two Open Championships at The Old Course in 2000 and 2005.

Sharing the thought process behind bringing his joint venture with Timberlake to the town, Woods said:

"I have been fortunate enough to enjoy many special moments here at St. Andrews. We all wanted to bring our T-Squared Social concept to St. Andrews to add to the local community and be a welcoming place for those living in St. Andrews and for visitors alike."
