Rory McIlroy delighted a young fan with a heartwarming gesture during the final round of the Memorial Tournament at Muirfield Village.

As McIlroy made his way to the next tee on Sunday, a young girl named Lily caught the six-time major champion's attention from behind the ropes.

"Nice job, Rory... you're the best!" she shouted.

McIlroy immediately responded by walking over and handing his golf ball to her, sparking a huge smile from the youngster and drawing appreciation from those nearby.

Lily's mother could be heard thanking the world number two for the thoughtful gift.

The PGA Tour shared footage of the moment on social media, with golf fans quick to praise McIlroy for taking the time to make a young supporter's day.

McIlroy had started the final round in sensational fashion, carding five birdies in his opening six holes to surge up the leaderboard.

His momentum was halted at the seventh, however, when he remarkably whiffed a chip shot from the right side of the green, leading to a bogey.

Despite the setback, McIlroy remained four-under par for the day and for the tournament, which ranked him just outside the top 10.

The Memorial Tournament marks McIlroy's final start before the U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills which gets underway in two weeks' time.

The 37-year-old Northern Irishman will go in pursuit of a seventh major title and second U.S. Open having won his first at Congressional in 2011.
