Tour pro weighs in on Scottie Scheffler's "odd" trait and "unimaginable" Presidents Cup mistake

English tour pro Eddie Pepperell says it's "odd" Scottie Scheffler demonstrates a "peculiar lack of patience" with the media despite there being so much to admire about his character.

Scheffler helped the United States to Presidents Cup success over the weekend at Medinah Country Club in Chicago.

But the world number one was involved in two moments that showed contrasting sides to his character.

First, Scheffler was involved in an incredible act of sportsmanship when he conceded Nico Echavarria's 30-foot par putt on the 14th hole after a spectator yelled during the Colombian's backswing before he played his tee shot.

Then, in the immediate aftermath of securing a point for the United States, Scheffler appeared to become agitated with NBC's Cara Banks after she asked the 30-year-old about his thoughts and feelings on being benched by captain Brandt Snedeker for the Saturday foursomes.

"I mean, do you want to talk about today's match?" Scheffler said. "I just played some golf out there, do you want to talk about that?"

Speaking on the latest edition of The Chipping Forecast, Pepperell said Scheffler "has a peculiar lack of patience" with the media.

He added: "Because obviously this is not the first time that he's come out with something like this in response to reporters' questions, you know, saying, 'That's a dumb question, next question'.

"You know, I find that ... I do find that odd about his character, I have to say, given that I think there's so much to admire about his character in general."

Pepperell was referring to several incidents involving Scheffler.

For example, Scheffler was asked by a reporter after shooting a 65 in the third round of the 2026 Masters whether he felt like he left a few shots out there.

He responded: "That's just a terrible question. Next question. Awful."

In March, Scheffler also refused to entertain a question about course conditions ahead of The Players at TPC Sawgrass, saying he believed his answer would be used for "clickbait".

Last August, Scheffler became frustrated with the number of questions he was asked about the Ryder Cup before teeing it up at the BMW Championship.

The PGA Tour event was being contested one month before the biennial dust-up against Europe at Bethpage Black. 

"I love answering questions about the Ryder Cup, but this is ridiculous," Scheffler said.

"We're at the BMW Championship. The Ryder Cup is over a month away. If you want to talk about this week, let's talk about this week.

"If not, I've got practice to do. I'm getting ready for a golf tournament."

"That's unimaginable"

Pepperell also gave his view on the performance of the aforementioned Snedeker.

Snedeker sounded like a beaten man on the eve of the final day of the Presidents Cup, admitting he had made mistakes.

The skipper was also involved in an embarrassing moment when he forgot his pairings during a live interview.

"I thought to myself, that's unimaginable," said Pepperell. "Luke Donald would never make that kind of error.

"And I think it goes to show the importance of really knowing your stuff and being fully invested in the role.

"And I think that's the thing we see time and time again, compared to a Luke Donald or a Paul McGinley, these very astute captains who we've had over the years.

"And actually, you could criticise some of these former European captains, and I'm not going to name names, because they've also gotten people's names wrong and things like this.

"So it's just a lack of attention to detail that I think plagues and continues to plague American captains, it seems.

"And the, you know, the difference between their performances as a pair compared to individuals still is ... I can't quite work that one out.

"I don't know that anybody can, and it's remarkable."
