Watch: U.S. golf star chuckles at Bryson DeChambeau dig during Presidents Cup

Bryson DeChambeau was not at Medinah for the opening day of the Presidents Cup, but the two-time U.S. Open champion still managed to make an appearance of sorts.

A spectator watching Sam Burns during Thursday's opening matches invoked DeChambeau while Burns prepared to play a shot from the rough, drawing a laugh from the American.

"The grass was standing up, but I DeChambeau'd it for you," the fan said.

The comment was a reference to the two-stroke penalty DeChambeau received during this year's Open Championship at Royal Birkdale after officials ruled that he had improved the lie of his ball by stepping on grass surrounding it.. 

Burns, who appeared to find the remark amusing, continued with the shot as the match resumed.

The joke came during a tense four-ball contest involving Burns and Scottie Scheffler against Min Woo Lee and Sungjae Im. 

The American pairing eventually prevailed, closing out a victory on the 18th hole and securing a point for the United States.

Team USA emerged with a 3-2 lead after day one of the 2026 Presidents Cup but have it all to do over the weekend after Geoff Ogilvy's International side came roaring back on day two and swept the foursomes session 5-0. 

As for the DeChambeau "dig", the reference was particularly pertinent for Burns because he was among the players who defended him following the controversial penalty at the Open.

Burns played alongside DeChambeau in round three of the final men's major of the year, 24 hours after the LIV Golf star threatened to withdraw and even get US president Donald Trump involved. 

"In my personal opinion, I honestly feel bad for Bryson in the situation that he was in," Burns previously said. 

"From my perspective, I didn't feel like maybe there was enough evidence for him to deserve a penalty there. I feel bad for him.

"I think he played an incredible round of golf late yesterday, and it's unfortunate to have something kind of like that where they come in after your round and tell you you're being docked two shots.

"But props to him. He came out and played a really nice round of golf today, and that takes a lot of grit to be able to come out and do that. So I was impressed."

DeChambeau is not part of the Presidents Cup field this week because LIV Golf players are prohibited from playing. 

Since LIV's season ended prematurely, he has been releasing new material from home, including the latest edition of his hole-in-one challenge. 

He is yet to confirm whether or not he will be sticking around with LIV Golf in 2027.
