England hasn't seen Ryder Cup golf in coming up for 25 years – a period that will stretch to more than three decades by the time a slot comes open for Europe to announce a new host of the biennial showdown between Europe and The USA.

That, however, could soon be set to change, with the Cup descending in the most unlikely of places. Greater Manchester, a city full of great golf courses but often overlooked for its golfing prowess, may well be England's next Ryder Cup host venue, with Mayor Andy Burnham today revealing that the city is in talks to launch its own bid to bring the Ryder Cup to the north west in 2035.

Speaking as part of an announcement of a new £70m funding package for key infrastructure in the region, Burnham revealed that much of the new spending in the region has been decided with a presumptive bid for the Cup in mind. Greater Manchester Combined Authority confirmed the region was preparing to host "the biggest ever Ryder Cup".

The bid will centre around the Greater Manchester town of Bolton, where Hulton Park, a brand new championship-calibre golf resort, is currently under construction (the course is set to be laid out by European Golf Design). It will lie on the grounds of Hulton Park, a 700-year-old estate that was purchased in 2010 after falling into disrepair.

Speaking to reporters as part of the announcement, North West local Tommy Fleetwood expressed his excitement about the Ryder Cup returning to his home region. "As a golfer, a Ryder Cup being in England, first and foremost, would be something special," he said. "On top of that, to do it in the north-west of England, where I'm from, would be amazing."

Manchester isn't the only English locale with its sights set on hosting the Ryder Cup. Two other English courses are known to be planning bids for the event: Kent's London Golf Club, and Luton Hoo – a new course planned for construction in Bedfordshire.
