Luke Donald's defending European champions will take a three-point lead over Keegan Bradley's Team USA heading into the weekend of the 2025 Ryder Cup at Bethpage in New York.

Europe heavily dominated the day one morning foursomes and at one stage the scoreline threatened to be another 4-0 drubbing just like in Rome in 2023.

Jon Rahm and Tyrrell Hatton saw off Bryson DeChambeau and Justin Thomas 4&3, before Ludvig Aberg and Matt Fitzpatrick sealed the shock of the week thus far with a 5&3 demolition of arguably America's strongest pairing Scottie Scheffler and Russell Henley.

Rory McIlroy and Tommy Fleetwood then made it 3-0 to the visitors with a comfortable 5&4 win.

Xander Schauffele and Patrick Cantlay prevented a whitewash when holding on for a 2up victory over Bob MacIntyre and Viktor Hovland in the anchor match.

Both captains rung significant changes in the afternoon fourballs as expected, but it was Europe who once again came out on top.

A dominant victory for Rahm and Sepp Straka over Scheffler and JJ Spaun in the top game (3&2) was then followed by a come from behind 1up victory for English duo Fleetwood and Justin Rose.

USA's sole victory of the fourballs came courtesy of a comfortable 6&5 win for Thomas and Cameron Young, and the anchor match was tied between McIlroy and Shane Lowry and Cantlay and Sam Burns.

It means Europe take a handy three-point lead into the weekend at the 2025 Ryder Cup with the scoreline set at 5.5-2.5

Saturday will welcome another set of four morning foursomes matches followed by four afternoon fourballs matches.

The fate of the Ryder Cup will then be decided by 12 singles matches on Sunday afternoon.

Europe need just 14 points in order to retain the Ryder Cup, while USA must reach 14.5 to lift what is arguably now sport's most famous trophy.

To further put the scoreline in perspective, Europe need just 8.5 points from an available 20 to retain the cup.

The leading team after day one has won the last five renewals of the Ryder Cup.

Donald's Europe are attempting to become the first away team to win the Ryder Cup since Medinah in 2012

Should they seal the deal then Donald would also become the first captain since his compatriot Tony Jacklin in 1989 to win consecutive Ryder Cup matches.

But before we get to the final day, we have Saturday to look forward to and the morning foursomes that get underway bright and early at 7.10am

The fourballs will then follow straight after from 12.25pm.
