Solheim Cup TV figures make for strange reading after brilliant 2026 contest

Golf Channel's U.S. audience fell sharply despite a thrilling weekend at Bernardus Golf that delivered an electric atmosphere and one of the competition's most dramatic finishes.

The 2026 Solheim Cup appeared to be a major success on the ground, but disappointing U.S. television figures have raised questions about the event’s ability to translate its popularity into a wider American audience.

Europe claimed a thrilling 15-13 victory over the United States at Bernardus Golf in the Netherlands earlier this month, with the outcome decided in a dramatic final day of singles.

However, Golf Channel's audience for Sunday’s action reportedly averaged just 170,000 viewers, according to Sports Business Journal’s Josh Carpenter

That was down from 179,000 on Saturday, despite the teams being tied at 8-8 heading into the final day.

The figure also represents a significant decline from the 277,000 viewers who watched the final day of the 2023 Solheim Cup in Spain — a drop of nearly 40%

Yet those numbers don't necessarily tell the full story.

From what we witnessed on the ground at GolfMagic, the 2026 Solheim Cup appeared to be among the most popular editions we have experienced.

The 1st tee stadium was arguably better than ever, while Bernardus Golf produced an excellent atmosphere throughout the three days.

Supporters from both sides played their part, with the vast majority of spectators contributing to a passionate but respectful environment.

More importantly, the golf itself delivered.

The United States responded impressively after falling behind early in the contest, producing a dramatic fightback on Saturday to level the match at 8-8.

That set up a fascinating final day, only for Europe to regain control and eventually secure a two-point victory.

It was one of the most compelling Solheim Cups in recent memory — making the television figures all the more intriguing.

The comparison with previous editions of the Solheim Cup is stark.

Golf Channel averaged 227,000 viewers when the U.S. last won the competition on European soil in 2015, while the 2023 final day attracted 277,000.

The numbers have therefore prompted questions about how the LPGA can better convert the excitement generated at the venue into television audiences in the United States.

GolfMagic has reached out to Sky Sports to receive their own TV figures this side of the pond, but we have yet to hear back.

There are, however, encouraging signs in the wider LPGA picture.

Tour officials say 2026 viewership is trending upwards year-on-year across its television partners, while social media impressions during Solheim Cup week reportedly increased by around 30% compared with 2023.

The 2028 edition at Valhalla Golf Club could provide another opportunity to grow the event's American audience, with a more favourable U.S. television window expected.

For now, the 2026 Solheim Cup presents an interesting paradox: the viewing figures may have disappointed, but the experience inside Bernardus Golf suggested the appetite for the competition itself remains strong.
