European Solheim Cup vice-captain slams "stupid" Team USA decision

European Solheim Cup vice-captain Mel Reid says the decision by the United States team to post a "celebratory" video before the Sunday singles was "stupid".

Anna Nordqvist's dozen reclaimed the Solheim Cup last week with a dramatic 15-13 victory over Angela Stanford's Team USA.

The momentum was undoubtedly with the Americans on the eve of the final day, though, as an inspired performance by Jennifer Kupcho on Saturday evening helped the red, white and blue draw level at 8-8 heading into the singles.

Kupcho drained a 90-foot putt in the closing stages of her match with Lindy Duncan against Carlota Ciganda and Celine Boutier, and the U.S. team decided to celebrate by sinking a few beers on the team bus.

Reid told the Quiet Please podcast that the European team wouldn't have done the same and labelled the decision to post the video as "stupid". 

“It was like they'd won the bloody thing," Reid said. 

"You can’t give a team that kind of motivation, especially the calibre of team that Europe or America is. 

"We would never do that. Don't post it, leave it, just have it as a special moment. 

"No-one posted about us singing on the bus, because it was a special moment between us. 

"People were filming it, but everyone knew not to post it. 

"It's a special place, a bond of trust. When we saw that, we were like, 'that's interesting'. 

"It just gave us extra motivation."

Reid said the clip "p----- off" the team. 

She added: "Why do that to us? It p----- us off. You can't p--- us off. 

"Number one rule, we even said at the start of the week, number one rule, don't purposely p— them off, don't do stupid s—, and don't get involved because we don't need to give them motivation. They're too good."

Reid also dismissed Stanford's claims about the greens. 

Stanford said the greens at Bernardus Golf were unusually slow and caught the U.S. team off guard. 

She implied something was up by suggesting that she didn't get to know the superintendent as well as she should have. 

Nordqvist disputed the implication the course had been deliberately set up to favour Europe. 

Reid agreed, adding: "The greens were slow, they were at 10.5 [on the stimp] and Angela was like, 'we weren't expecting it to be that slow'. 

"I'll give you some inside knowledge, neither did our players. We had five days to prep, so did you.

"She makes out that it was to benefit us, and we were like no. 

"One was weather, we were predicted a lot of wind, so if we had it at 12, they were going to go off the green. 

"The greens were so undulating. So that was reason number one. And reason number two, our players are used to playing on fast greens.

"It literally doesn’t benefit us any more than it benefits you."

Reid added: "So you did have five days to prep the way that we did. Our players aren't used to playing on greens like that either. 

"Our players are like, 'wow, these greens are slow', and it’s like, 'yeah, get used to it because they're not getting any quicker. Deal with it'.

"If that/s what she thought, it's not true. These are the best players in the world. 

"I’m sorry, if you can't get a green speed right in five days, there’s something wrong."
