Who presents Rory McIlroy the Green Jacket if he wins The Masters again?
Masters 2026: What happens if Rory McIlroy defends his title at Augusta National?
Rory McIlroy will take a commanding six-shot lead into the weekend at The Masters, setting a new 36-hole record advantage at Augusta National Golf Club.
The 36-year-old’s dominance places him on the brink of a successful title defence — something achieved only three times in Masters history. Should McIlroy close out victory on Sunday, attention will quickly turn to one of Augusta’s most enduring traditions: who presents the champion with the coveted Green Jacket?
Typically, the defending champion helps the new winner into the jacket during the ceremony inside the iconic Butler Cabin. However, that custom changes when a player wins back-to-back titles.
When Jack Nicklaus defended The Masters in 1966, he initially presented the jacket to himself following guidance from Masters co-founder Bobby Jones. But that approach was later revised.
Since Nick Faldo became the second player to successfully defend the title in 1990, the responsibility has fallen to the Augusta National chairman. In Faldo’s case, chairman Hord Hardin conducted the honours.
The same protocol applied in 2002, when Tiger Woods secured consecutive victories and was presented his jacket by chairman Hootie Johnson.
If McIlroy joins that exclusive club, current chairman Fred Ridley is expected to present the Green Jacket in Butler Cabin.
Victory would see McIlroy become just the fourth player — alongside Nicklaus, Faldo and Woods — to win consecutive Masters titles, and would mark his sixth major championship triumph.
McIlroy’s position atop the leaderboard heading into the weekend has been built on a blistering second-round 65, highlighted by six birdies across his final seven holes, including a remarkable chip-in from 50 yards at the 17th.
Already having completed the career Grand Slam at Augusta in 2025, McIlroy admitted he is playing with a sense of freedom this week, describing his mindset as “house money”.
He leads Patrick Reed and Sam Burns by six shots heading into the weekend, with Tommy Fleetwood, Justin Rose and Shane Lowry a further shot back.
Can McIlroy hold his nerve and once again enter the record books at Augusta?
The bookies certainly so, with his price now down to as low as 1/3 to get the job done.
