Tour pro questions Bryson DeChambeau's ambitions after Masters catastrophe

England's Eddie Pepperell has offered his thoughts after one of the pre-tournament favourites, Bryson DeChambeau, departed the first men's major of the year after 36 holes.

England's Eddie Pepperell has questioned Bryson DeChambeau's true ambitions after a disastrous finish saw the two-time major champion miss the cut at the 2026 Masters

DeChambeau's chances of slipping on the green jacket at Augusta National on Sunday evening were slim after he began the first men's major of the year with a brutal four-over 76.

The 32-year-old fought hard on Friday and, standing on the 18th hole, could have advanced to the weekend even if he dropped a shot.

But disaster struck for the LIV Golf recruit, with the American recording a triple-bogey seven to miss the cut by two strokes.

DeChambeau hit his tee shot into the trees, punched out and found the greenside bunker. He left his third in the sand, perhaps trying to get too cute with it.

His fourth shot was dreadful by his standards, landing well short of the pin and trickling all the way off the front of the green. It was the second day in a row DeChambeau endured a nightmare in the sand.

On Thursday, DeChambeau needed three attempts to get out of the greenside bunker at the 11th hole.

A furious DeChambeau, who has now missed three cuts on his last five trips to Augusta, will now have to wait another 12 months before he gets another crack at the whip.

Pepperell told the latest edition of the Chipping Forecast that he was reluctant to twist the knife on DeChambeau, but he described his attempts at No.18 as "horrific".

And he urged DeChambeau to sort his bunker play out before recording another "Break 50" or trick shot challenge for his YouTube channel.

"The bunker shot on 11 yesterday was challenging," Pepperrell said. "[But] the one on 18 today, not at all, because you've got 15 feet long of the flag, and kind of that is the shot you’re going for.

"There were two horrific attempts, and, you know, I don't wish to put the knife in, but if he records another Break 50 on YouTube or hits the ball over his house on YouTube before we see him back at a major championship getting out of bunkers properly, then I think we need to be asking questions about his true ambitions and those desires in the game.

"Because what are we going for? What is Bryson DeChambeau attempting to be?"

DeChambeau entered this week full of confidence having already entered the winner's circle twice on the PIF-backed LIV Golf League. He won in South Africa and Singapore in sudden-death playoffs.

His recent performances at Augusta also suggested he was finally getting to grips with the major.

Last April, DeChambeau found himself in the final group alongside the defending champion Rory McIlroy. Two years ago, DeChambeau shared sixth place, nine behind Scottie Scheffler.

Only five of 10 LIV Golf players made the cut at the 90th Masters.

Former champions Jon Rahm, Dustin Johnson, Sergio Garcia and Charl Schwartzel advanced to the weekend.

But England's Tyrrell Hatton appears to have the best chance of challenging for the title and is nicely positioned among a group of six players on four-under.

Hatton played like a man possessed on Friday, hitting every single green in regulation and registering seven birdies in a stunning 66.

Pepperell added: "That was the thing that struck me over two days, and I actually don't think it’s any real surprise that Tyrrell is the guy leading the charge [for LIV Golf], because I believe that Tyrell - it is golf outside of LIV that really stokes Tyrrell."
