PGA Championship LIVE: Scottie Scheffler in the mix, Rory McIlroy makes cut on number

PGA Championship LIVE: Follow live updates from the second round of the 2025 PGA Championship at Quail Hollow Club.

Scottie Scheffler carded a 3-under 68 in the second round of the PGA Championship to move within three shots of the lead heading into the weekend at Quail Hollow Club.

Rory McIlroy made the cut mark on the number after a 69, but it was a round that could and should have been so much better with two late bogeys.

The third member of the marquee group in defending champion Xander Schauffele carded a 70 to also narrowly make the cut.

It marks a 64th consecutive cut in the majors for Schauffele.

Scheffler finds himself at 5-under par thru 36 holes, while McIlroy and Schauffele are well down the board at 1-over par.

None of the world's top three have brought their A-games to Charlotte so far this week, but much can change with 36 holes left to play.

Jhonattan Vegas is still the player everyone has to catch as the Venezualan posted a 70 to nudge himself up to 8-under par.

Despite a shocking double on the final hole, Vegas holds a two-shot lead over Matthieu Pavon (65), Matt Fitzpatrick (68) and Si Woo Kim (64) heading into Saturday's third round.

Scheffler then finds himself a further shot back alongside a resurgent Max Homa, who equalled the best score of the week (64).

The rounds of 64 from both Kim and Homa marked both of their best rounds at a major.

Kim made an ace on the par-3 6th, which marked the second hole-in-one of the week and also the longest ace in major history at 238 yards.

Elsewhere, LIV Golf superstar Bryson DeChambeau pushed himself up the board with a 68 to move to 3-under par.

McIlroy bogey at 18

Scheffler -5, McIlroy +1, Schauffele +1 (F)

Scheffler two-putts for par and a round of 68 to move to 5-under par.

It sees the World No.1 just three shots back in T5 heading into the weekend.

McIlroy hit a wild drive down the 18th and was fortunate to miss the water, but he made a bogey for a round of 69 on a day that could and should have been so much better.

Schauffele made a par on 18 to card a 70.

Both McIlroy and Schauffele have made the cut on the number at 1-over par.

But that is nine shots off the lead.

Scottie and Rory miss tiddlers

Scheffler -5, McIlroy Par, Schauffele +1 (17)

Quite unbelievable.

Scheffler misses a four-footer for birdie and taps in for par.

McIlroy then follows on the same line and misses his three-footer for par.

He falls back to level par and just inside the cut mark.

Schauffele makes par to remain at 1-over par, which is on the cut line.

They're now heading down the toughest hole on the course.

Tense stuff.

Si Woo Kim birdie

Kim -6 (16)

It's another birdie for Si Woo Kim.

He's just rolled in a birdie on the par-5 7th to move it to 7-under for the round and to 6-under par for the tournament.

Kim is a former Players champion but he has yet to win a major.

Birdies all round in the marquee group

Scheffler -5, McIlroy -1, Schauffele +1

Birdies all round for the marquee group on the par-5 15th.

Scheffler and McIlroy both got up and down for birdie from short of the green.

Schauffele found the green in two and two-putted for birdie.

Now for the Green Mile, one of the toughest three-hole stretches in world golf.

SI WOO HOLE IN ONE

Kim -5 (15)

SI WOO KIM MAKES AN ACE ON THE MONSTER PAR-3 6TH!

Kim now vaults into contention for a first major title, too.

The South Korean is 6-under par for the round and up to 5-under par for the tournament in T4.

It marks the second hole-in-one in this week's PGA Championship following Eric Cole's ace on the 4th in the first round.

Kim has now made six aces on the PGA Tour.

23:01
Sloppy finish from Smalley

Smalley -4 (F)

Smalley ends the round with back to back bogeys to card a 71.

But he's in great position for a first career major title at 4-under par.

Smalley made it into the field as the first alternate after Sahith Theegala WD with a neck injury.

He probably owes a Sahith a drink.

22:47
Birdies for Scheffler and McIlroy

Scheffler -4, McIlroy Par (14)

Up and down birdies from sand for both Scheffler and McIlroy on the short par-4 14th.

Now on to the par-5 15th.

Birdies a must for both.

22:26
Bogey for Scheffler, clutch par save for McIlroy

McIlroy +2, Scheffler -3 (13)

Scheffler tugs his tee shot into the deep rough on the par-3 13th and he fails to get up and down.

It leads to a bogey and the World No.1 is back outside the top 10 on 3-under par.

McIlroy looked in big trouble of dropping another shot but he hit a beautiful pitch shot to three feet and made the par save.

22:04
McIlroy goes backwards

McIlroy E, Schauffele +3, Scheffler -4 (10)

Rory loses momentum at the 10th.

He finds the fairway bunker and sends his approach to the back left of the green.

His birdie putt lacks the required juice and he can't save par.

Schauffele also can't save par after missing the green left.

Par for Scheffler.

21:44
Another one drops for McIlroy

McIlroy -1, Schauffele +2, Scheffler -4 (10)

This is a much better display from Rory McIlroy today.

He's just off the green at the par-5 10th and putts across the green to five feet and promptly rolls in the birdie putt to get into the red numbers.

It's remarkable that he's only seven adrift of the lead now.

Schauffele gets a much-needed four.

Scheffler has a great opportunity to get to 5-under but cannot believe his putt doesn't move.

Aghast, he turns to his caddie Ted Scott in disgust.

21:35
Pars all round for marquee group

McIlroy E, Schauffele +3, Scheffler -4 (9)

No dramas for this trio at the 9th.

McIlroy has work to do to save par after his tee shot finds the left rough.

His approach finds the putting surface but is still some 60 feet from the hole. He nestles the long-range putt to a matter of inches and tidies up his par.

Scheffler and Schauffele also walk off the long par-4 with fours.

21:32
Fitzpatrick gets to 5-under

Fitzpatrick -5, Rahm -2 (10)

The 2022 U.S. Open champ is having a great week.

He takes advantage of the par-5 10th to move within three of the lead.

21:31
Donald slips further back

Donald -2 (14*)

Luke Donald looks pretty annoyed at the 5th hole. He misses a glorious chance from five feet to get one stroke back but pulls it left.

21:12
Here comes Rory McIlroy

McIlroy E, Schauffele +3, Scheffler -4 (8)

The marquee group are onto the 8th hole.

It's a short par-4 and McIlroy makes easy work of it.

He sends a wedge to five feet and rolls in the birdie putt to move back to level par.

Scheffler's approach was also what you expect from the best player in the world and he too puts a circle on his scorecard.

Schauffele makes his second par in a row.

McIlroy on the cut line

McIlroy +1, Schauffele +3, Scheffler -3 (7)

Superb stuff from the Northern Irishman. He gently nudges his greenside chip towards the hole and, even though it trickles on further than what he liked, he manages to make the returning putt for a much-needed birdie.

Schauffele shows his class by chipping in for par.

Scheffler makes his par.

20:47
Which players won't be here for the weekend?

With the projected cut at 1-over, there are a number of high-profile players that are looking like they won't be here for the weekend.

They include: Jordan Spieth, Hideki Matsuyama, Ludvig Aberg, Justin Thomas, Patrick Reed, Patrick Cantlay, Will Zalatoris, Phil Mickelson, Justin Rose, Cameron Smith and Dustin Johnson.

20:47
Another birdie for Rahm

Fitzpatrick -4, Rahm -2 (8)

Another birdie putt drops for Rahm at the 8th. Fitzpatrick drops one shot after his short par putt lips out.

20:45
Some round Phil Mickelson is putting together

P. Mickelson +6 (9)

After a disastrous opening round (78), Mickelson is making a charge for the cut.

He's just found his third birdie in a row at the par-4 9th.

Can he find some more magic on the back nine?

20:43
Schauffele in the water

McIlroy +2, Schauffele +3, Scheffler -3 (6*)

Schauffele finds the fairway bunker at the par-5 6th.

Knowing that he needs to try and make something happen, he decides to have a crack at the green but comes up and out of his swing early.

His golf ball flies low, right and straight into the water.

Now he's scrambling for par.

McIlroy finds the fairway and sends a long iron straight at the pin. His TP5 has a smidge too much juice and it trickles long of the green. Could chip in from there, though.

Scheffler sensibly lays up and finds the green with his third.

20:28
Rahm missing competitive instinct

Fitzpatrick -5, Rahm -1 (7)

Former Ryder Cup captain turned Sky Sports pundit Paul McGinley questions whether Rahm is lacking a competitive edge these days since switching to LIV.

McGinley says his results on the breakaway don't stack up.

Rahm moves into the red numbers with a 10-foot birdie putt at the 7th but he's still some way off the lead.

Fitzpatrick moves to within three of the lead. His greenside chip nearly drops for eagle. Easy birdie though.

20:26
Another birdie for Bob MacIntyre

R. MacIntyre -4 (6)

Class from the Scot. He grabs his second birdie at the par-5 15th to move within four of the lead.

20:24
Not enough club for Rory McIlroy

McIlroy +2, Schauffele +3, Scheffler -3 (6)

McIlroy doesn't take enough club at the mammoth 252-yard par-3 6th.

His approach finds the front edge and rolls back down the hill. He saves another par.

Schauffele pays the price for finding the sand with his tee shot and slips to 3-over.

Easy par for Scheffler.

20:18
Rory McIlroy scrambling well

McIlroy +2, Schauffele +2, Scheffler -3 (5)

Rory McIlroy finds the fairway at the 5th but leaves himself with work to do after his birdie putt ends up six feet from the hole.

He manages to convert the par putt though.

Schauffele and Scheffler also walk off the green with solid and unspectacular pars.
