A record-breaking $20.5 million purse was on offer at the 2026 PGA Championship at Aronimink Golf Club in Pennsylvania, with England’s Aaron Rai walking away with a career-changing payday of $3.69 million after securing his first major championship victory.

The winner’s cheque marked the biggest payout of Rai’s career and came after a sensational Sunday performance from the 31-year-old, who carded a stunning final-round 65 to finish on nine-under par and win by three shots over Jon Rahm and Alex Smalley.

The total purse represented a $1.5 million increase on the previous year’s PGA Championship prize fund, although it still fell slightly short of the Masters purse earlier in the season.

Rai sealed the Wanamaker Trophy in unforgettable fashion when he buried a remarkable 70-foot birdie putt on the par-three 17th to finally separate himself from the chasing pack before calmly parring the final hole.

In total, Rai holed an astonishing 182 feet of putts during Sunday’s final round in what proved to be the finest performance of his career.

The victory also carried huge historical significance. Rai became the first Englishman to win the PGA Championship since the late Jim Barnes lifted the trophy in 1916 and 1919. It also marked the first time in the modern era that European golfers have won the opening two men’s majors of the season.

Sunday’s closing 65 was the lowest round of Rai’s major championship career, coming in his 46th round at one of golf’s four biggest events. Prior to this week, his best finish in a major was tied-19th.

The triumph was Rai’s second PGA Tour title following his breakthrough victory at the Wyndham Championship in 2024, while he has also won four times on the DP World Tour.

Rai will now move to a career high of 15th in the Official World Golf Rankings (OWGR).

After tapping in for par on the 72nd hole, Rai saluted the Aronimink crowd before embracing his wife, Gaurika Bishnoi, who competes on the Ladies European Tour.
