1. Manchester Golf Club

Founded in 1882, Manchester Golf Club provides a blend moorland, heathland and parkland features, and covers 240 acres. It is located just off the M62 and A627(M), on the way to Rochdale. The course measures 6,650 yards and was designed by legendary course architect, Harry S Colt. The standard green fees aren't cheap, but if you play at the right times then some good deals can be found.

2. Fairfield Golf & Sailing Club

This 6,058-yard course has recently been redeveloped at a cost of £1.8m by Andrew Murray, turning it into a longer, tougher and all-round better course. Whilst the revamp has certainly improved the course, it remains affordable.

3. Pike Fold Golf Club

Pike Fold is situated just north of the M60, inbetween the M62 and M66, just south of Bury. It has USGA greens, which are usually quite fast, and be prepared to battle the wind as the course is fairly exposed. Green fees are a flat rate of £20, regardless of when you play.

4. Worsley Golf Club

5. Denton Golf Club

Denton is sandwiched between the Gorton Upper Reservoir and the M60. The course starts with a whopping 539-yard par five, which sets the tone for a challenging round ahead. At a minimum of £35 per round though, it is not cheap.

6. Stockport Golf Club

The current course was designed by 1902 Open champion Sandy Herd, and plays 6,006 yards off the yellow tees. The course is usually immaculately kept and very presentable, although at £45 for a round, there are certainly cheaper options.

Cost of round: £45-50
Playing requirements: None

7. Prestwich Golf Club

Prestwich is one of the cheaper courses around, and one of the more central too. There are no heroics on this parkland course and it is relatively short by today's standards, but there is also not too much to fault, given the price.

Cost of round: £13-20
Playing requirements: None
