Brooks Koepka found himself trailing by a margin much bigger than he would have liked after the opening round of the 2023 US Open

But that didn't matter to the five-time major champion, who won the US Open in 2017 and 2018.

Koepka was tracked down by a group of reporters immediately after posting his 1-over 71, which was some way back of the record-breaking pair of 62s carded by early leaders Xander Schauffele and Rickie Fowler

Did that change Koepka's mindset, one reporter asked, having seen the 8-under posted by X-Man and Rick before teeing off?

Koepka offered perhaps the most on-brand response before marching off to the range:

"It doesn't matter — playing the golf course, not them."

Koepka, 33, began his week in a cheeky mood and left his pre-tournament news conference with a joke about the PGA Tour

He was asked about the PGA Tour's deal with LIV Golf's Saudi backers - PIF - but decided to offer the response we have become accustomed to.

"There's four weeks a year I really care about and this is one of them," said Koepka. "And I want to play well."

It was in that press conference where Koepka explored why he thrives at major championship golf.

Aside from revelling in the chaos, he believes he has a particular knack for outlasting his opponents.

Most of his wins have been at pretty much 10-under of less, Koepka said, which is 'suited to major championship golf'.

He added:

"I just feel like I can outlast everybody when it comes to having to par things to death or just kind of wearing guys out on the golf course and just mentally beating you and knowing when it's my time to kind of take that opportunity and go with it.
"I think being patient is a big thing with that, as well, and just knowing when to go after a flag or when to play cautious."
