One of the criticisms levelled at LIV Golf players such as Bryson DeChambeau when they joined the rival league was they no longer cared.

Tiger Woods famously accused some of the breakaway tour players of lacking an incentive. Others said they had simply cashed in.

There was an absence of the desire to go out and earn it, Woods said.

DeChambeau will have heard those words from the 15-time major champ and would've been keen to prove the cat and his doubters wrong by adding to his major haul.

The golfer is now fit, healthy, skinnier than ever and appears to be slowly creeping back to the type of form that saw him capture the 2020 US Open at Winged Foot.

One cool memory of that major was watching DeChambeau practice long into the night. He smashed balls in the pitch black such was his dedication.

DeChambeau said after his opening round of the 2023 US Open that he's hit more balls than he would like to.

He isn't lying.

DeChambeau said just trying to figure out what he did in 2018 that was so repeatable.

That is absolutely insane, isn't it?

"I feel like I'm very close to getting it [the feeling in his swing], DeChambeau said after his round, adding:

"Because I had it at the PGA [Championship] for the first two days and then it kind of faltered a little bit. But I was still able to play really good solid golf, score well.

He continued:

"So we're trying to figure out what that is, whether that's forces -- I know it's stability in the hands. Like I don't get that stability. Like on nine I pulled it and like, whoa, didn't feel like I did that.
"So working through why when I apply a certain amount of force, a lot of force, it just sometimes feels different through impact and trying to hone that in.
"If I have what I had at the PGA I'll be contending for sure."
