US PGA Championship next to be CANCELLED

When the news broke last week that The Masters was postponed, every golf fan around the world was disappointed, but given the current circumstances it's a decision that simply had to be made, but now the US PGA Championship is also at risk of being cancelled.

Brooks Koepka is due to defend his back-to-back titles at TPC Harding Park in just nine weeks time, although there have been rumours that the venue could switch to TPC Sawgrass.

PGA Tour Commissioner had previously stated that the US PGA Championship would be going ahead and that it would be held at TPC Harding Park: "[PGA officials] are fully planning on proceeding with the PGA Championship at TPC Harding Park in San Francisco," Monahan said. "There is no plan at this point in time for the PGA Championship to be held [at TPC Sawgrass]. It's going to be held at TPC Harding Park."

Monahan's previous statement could soon change though, given the recommendations from the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, as the spread of COVID-19 continues to cause lockdowns worldwide.

The CDC said: “Large events and mass gatherings can contribute to the spread of Covid-19 in the United States via travellers who attend these events and introduce the virus to new communities.

“Examples of large events and mass gatherings include conferences, festivals, parades, concerts, sporting events, weddings and other types of assemblies. These events can be planned not only by organisations and communities but also by individuals.

“Therefore, CDC, in accordance with its guidance for large events and mass gatherings, recommends that for the next eight weeks, organisers (whether groups or individuals) cancel or postpone in-person events that consist of 50 people or more throughout the United States.”

The coronavirus is predicted to hit peak around Easter and it is likely that mass gatherings will continue to be cancelled for the next few months, putting the US PGA Championship in serious doubt.
