Rory McIlroy admitted his opening round at the BMW Championship was 'awful'.

McIlroy carded a level par 70 on Thursday at Caves Valley Golf Club in Maryland.

The $20m event is the second leg of the PGA Tour's playoffs, with only the top 30 in the FedEx Cup standings at the conclusion of this week earning a tee time at next week's Tour Championship at East Lake.

McIlroy is already assured a spot at the season finale, but will need to sort his game out quickly if he is to challenge for his fourth FedEx Cup title.

The Masters champion struggled off the tee in round one, hitting only five of a possible 14 fairways. His card also included three bogeys and three birdies.

"Awful," McIlroy told reporters when asked to characterise his first 18 holes.

"I got off to a bad start. Sort of pieced it together a little bit in the middle of the round and clawed it back to even par. But drove the ball terribly.

"Then when you're sort of hitting out of the rough from the fairway bunkers here - when I hit the fairways, I give myself chances. I need to hit more fairways the next three days."

The 36-year-old trails early leader Robert MacIntyre by a remarkable eight strokes.

Scotland's MacIntyre birdied six of his final holes to take a four-stroke lead at the summit with a scintillating eight-under 62.

The 29-year-old hit the turn in two-under, before catching fire at the 13th by draining a 66-foot birdie putt.

MacIntyre also holed putts from 33 feet, 17 feet, 11 feet, 22 feet and five feet.

World No.1 Scottie Scheffler, Viktor Hovland and Tommy Fleetwood are also inside the top-10.

Fleetwood will be particularly pleased with his start, given a week ago he endured his latest near miss in America.

The Englishman led by two strokes with three holes remaining at the FedEx St. Jude Championship, but appeared to succumb to the pressure once again.

Justin Rose ultimately prevailed in a dramatic play-off over J.J. Spaun in Memphis.
