Qualifying events launch Worsley Park's Trilby Tour season

WITH the build-up to the Lancashire leg of the 2014 William Hunt Trilby Tour now in full swing, the first of the region’s top amateur golfers have taken to the championship course at Worsley Park Hotel & Country Club for the opening qualifying event of the season.

Now in its eighth year the William Hunt Trilby Tour will once again be broadcast on Sky Sports as part of the Trilby Tour series, with the event at Worsley Park being aired next autumn.

The series attracts an annual viewership of over 2.5 million which officially makes it the largest event of its kind in Europe.

In the lead up to the main event that will crown Lancashire’s Trilby Tour champion on June 24, there will be three qualifiers, each of which carries one sought after Trilby Tour entry for the winner.

Although it was Manchester’s Allan Mole, Henry Porter, Ray Porter and Colin Stephenson who were first off the tee at the opening qualifying event, it was Worsley Park member Ian Bardsley who came through to win on the day. Making his local knowledge count he shot 73 winning the day with 36 Stableford points which secured him one of the last remaining spots in the finals later this month.

Bardsley, who pays off a 2-handicap, said: “Worsley Park is a great course and I think that the home advantage I had really helped me win out on the day and secure my qualifying spot. I really can’t wait for the Trilby Tour to come around. If I focus and play my game, there’s no reason why I can’t bring home the big crown at the end of the month.”

Two more qualifying events are scheduled for June 3 and June 17 – with two more entries for the winners up for grabs.

Director of golf at Worsley Park, Adam Moule, said: “The William Hunt Trilby Tour is one of the biggest and most stylish amateur competitions in the UK. The tournament is fiercely competitive and we’re really excited to host the event again in 2014. We have already seen a great reaction to the qualifying events which just goes to show how the popularity of the event continues to grow each year.”

Worsley Park’s championship course is regarded as one of the best in the region hosting internationally renowned events each year. The course is nestled amongst an idyllic leafy setting, just seconds away from direct transport links into Manchester and the surrounding area.
