“We compete with the big brands”: The hidden qualities that set Takomo apart
Behind the sleek looks, a rigorous devotion to quality and engineering have enabled the upstart Finnish brand to bring the fight directly to golf’s biggest players.

It’s hard to overstate Takomo’s status as a disruptor in the equipment space. The Finnish brand, famed for its emphasis on creating desirability through affordability, quality and a timeless, minimalist design philosophy, established an entirely new blueprint for affordable golf clubs when it debuted with its 101 irons more than a decade ago.
Ten years on, and while Takomo is still comparatively small compared to the billion-dollar equipment giants, in both size and operating philosophy it’s also far from a standard direct-to-consumer brand. There’s an enduring sense that an elevated mindset runs throughout the brand’s product range and manufacturing process, a distinct need to set itself apart in a section of the market long defined by products that perform as cheaply as they look.
This manifests not just in the famed visual look of the products, but the engineering and quality control that goes into every club before it even leaves the factory line.
There’s often a shadowy sense that you never quite know what you’re getting when buying more affordable clubs. Many brands have taken to simply stamping their logo on generic club templates – a practice that has become increasingly common as demand for entry-level clubs has grown. Takomo approaches things differently, however, with a rigorous prototyping and testing phase that goes into the development of each product.

“In the concepting phase, we might look at 50-150 different cosmetic designs and evaluate those against one another, eventually settling on a direction for the new product,” says Takomo. “It then goes through a number of testing phases to ensure that it meets the performance requirements.”
“We’ve been able to grow the product team to an extent where we are able to conduct the whole product development process, internally, and communicate our needs directly to the manufacturer. This also allows us to create designs and products that differentiate themselves from the rest of the market, and create a design direction that is uniquely on brand.”
There’s also a rigorous set of standards placed on manufacturing quality once the product is finalised and put into production, the result being a company that’s able to offer peace of mind to its customers that other D2C golf brands generally can’t.
“Every set goes through a QA process in which the swing weight, club length, loft and lie get double-checked,” explained a representative from the brand. “Then, there’s a more in-depth process that roughly every 15th set goes through, where the grooves, general assembly and component quality get checked. Should a set fail, then all the sets that have been completed since the last check go through the same process. Additionally, we quality check random sets from the warehouse too.”

Takomo in 2026 is, of course, a very different beast to what it was when the original 101 first debuted. Tour pro Wesley Bryan and YouTuber Grant Horvat are just two of the Finnish brand's most famous ambassadors and investors, while. Takomo's range has grown in recent times to match its rapidly ballooning status. The Finnish brand now boasts multiple iron ranges catering to just about every type of player out there, along with a suite of drivers, fairway woods and wedges.
All of this has fostered a sense that Takomo has transcended the direct to consumer space altogether. The real goal, according to Haapahovi, is proving a disruptor to the very biggest names in the market.
It’s an approach that’s working, with Takomo beginning to steal not just market share, but plaudits and industry awards away from brands with multiple times its budget and price tag. In a particular high-point for the brand, the 101 MKII Irons were named 2026’s best game improvement irons by MyGolfSpy (the first time a direct-to-consumer brand has received such an honour), the publication declaring them “a phenomenal blend of performance and value.”
“We do believe that we compete with the big brands, and should not be regarded as a D2C brand among other D2C’s.
