MacGregor's new MacTex X aims to rewrite the rulebook for a £150 driver

Budget club manufacturer MacGregor has been on a bit of a resurgence over the last couple of years, reminding everyone why it was once among the winningest club makers operating at the pro level.

The days of MacGregor clubs racking up majors are, of course, long gone. But it still serves a vital purpose as a maker of attractive, high-performing clubs for the budget sector, and over the last year has released some truly gorgeous irons in particular.

Now, it's adding to its flagship offering with a revamp of the MacTex X metalwood range, placing even more power and forgiveness into the bags of golfers at a price that could rock the best budget driver conversation.

How cheap, exactly? The driver tops out at just £149.99.

While there's no fancy carbon fibre or tungsten weighting here, what the MacTex does offer is a full forged 6AL-4V titanium head in the driver, with the adjoining fairway woods and hybrid made from durable 17-4 stainless steel. Each has been balanced with a fixed rear weight to place the centre of gravity low and rearward, promoting easy launch and distance.

The MacTex has specifically been designed with players of all ages and ability levels in mind, with the driver and woods all sharing a mid-launch, mid-spin profile that encourages easy distance. All are particularly lightweight as well, helping players of more moderate swing speeds generate easier club head speed.

All also come with a range of premium shaft options from UST-Mamiya and Project X, with the option to upgrade to more high-end options for £50 more. Golfers wanting an even more premium option (think a Carbon Crown and an even more premium look) should also check out the existing Tourney Max range, which retails for just £40 more.
