In our eighth club test of 2014, we survey ten premium wedges launched within the last 12 months.
About the test
Golfmagic Assistant Editor Andy Roberts, 8-handicap, and Golfmagic Staff Writer Charlie Lemay, 12-handicap, headed to the stunning St Ives (Hunts) Golf Club in Cambridgeshire to use the superb on-site practice facilities available, including custom fitting bays, grass short game area and bunkers.
Each of the ten brands featured in this test sent us two wedges so we could test out full wedge shots from around 100 yards, delicate chip shots around the green and splash shots from sand.
After warming up for ten minutes on the grass practice range, Andy and Charlie each struck five balls off the deck with each wedge to test out full wedge strikes, ten balls each with each wedge from 15 yards from the pin and ten balls each with each wedge from the bunker from similar distance.
Scoring was based on looks, feel and performance, with more weighting placed on the latter two criteria. Following the test, Andy and Charlie banged their heads together before dishing out Golfmagic Gold, Silver and Bronze awards to each wedge.
The list of awards and conclusion can be found on the last page of this feature.
With each wedge, we have also provided details of set price, available lofts, lie, bounce options, sole grinds, finishes and standard shaft. The test was carried out in alphabetical order.
