Eddie Pepperell nearly got DQ'd for a third time in seven events!

Eddie Pepperell revealed he was nearly disqualified for a third time in his last seven tournaments on day one of the British Masters at Close House.

Pepperell started with a solid 4-under 67 on Wednesday as the European Tour began the first event of its six-week UK Swing.

After being DQ'd at the Turkish Open when running out of golf balls last November and then being DQ'd again for signing an incorrect scorecard at the Qatar Masters earlier this year, the Englishman (possibly tongue-in-cheek) admitted it was nearly a hat-trick today after a mix-up with a pencil.

"I almost got disqualified for not having my pencil with me," said Pepperell.

"They had to give me a sanitised pencil, so that would have been an interesting disqualification."

Tournament host Lee Westwood opened with a 1-under 70 but was not happy with his performance at his home club.

"It was a bit of a struggle, I didn't really have control of my swing," said Westwood, who landed his 25th career European Tour title in Abu Dhabi in January. "I mis-clubbed a few times which is probably not acceptable being a member and the touring pro here.

"But I putted really well and ground it out. I felt like I had to make a lot of putts between four and eight feet all day, I rolled a couple of nice ones in and I think one under par is probably a really good score for the way that I played."

Shot of the day, or should we say up-and-down of the day, went to Scotland's David Law, who recovered incredibly from nearly going out of bounds in the deep rough to chip his ball out to within four feet of the pin for a par save.
