FIRE breaks out at The Belfry Hotel Resort Ryder Cup golf venue

Firefighters have been called to the famous Belfry Hotel & Resort this morning following a fire located at the hotel's leisure centre.

Warwickshire Fire and Rescue Department sent four appliances to The Belfry Hotel & Resort, located on Lichfield Road in Wishaw, in the early hours of Friday morning.

According to reports, the firefighters were equipped with breathing apparatus, hose reel jets, small gear and lighting to extinguish the flames.

While there is no information yet available as to what caused the fire, The Belfry's Twitter account has revealed everyone is safe and well.

The Belfry's tweet read: "Following a small fire in the mens changing room of the Leisure Club this morning, we would like to thank the Fire Brigade and our team for their prompt response & support. Everyone is safe and well and we hope to have the changing room facilities open again very soon."

The Belfry has hosted four Ryder Cup matches in the past - 1985, 1989, 1993 and 2002 - and it has also hosted a number of tournaments on the European Tour, most recently the Betfred British Masters earlier this year won by Richard Bland.

In 2013 it underwent a major £26 million renovation and in 2019 it was named as the world's best golf hotel.

The Belfry features three golf courses, including The Brabazon, which is the main tournament course, and the PGA National and The Derby.

The origins of The Belfry's main building date all the way back to the 13th century, when it served as a manor of the Knights Templar.
