Saudi Arabia wants to host a PGA Tour event and a World Cup of Golf

Saudi Golf Federation's chief executive officer has revealed intentions for Saudi Arabia to host a PGA Tour event in the near future, along with an imminent second European Tour event and even a future World Cup of Golf. 

Majed Al Sorour's comments come just a week after Royal Greens Golf & Country Club hosted its second Saudi International, which was won by Graeme McDowell with a two-stroke victory over Dustin Johnson. 

Currently, Saudi Arabia hosts the Saudi International on the European Tour and next month it will host the inaugural Saudi Ladies Championship on the Ladies European Tour. 

Al Sorour also revealed the Kingdom's plans to construct an additional 13 golf courses in Saudi Arabia.

"We would love to have the Asian Tour, we're part of Asia, then they allow us to be part of the bigger European Tour," said Al Sorour, speaking at the first ever Golf Saudi Summit in King Abdullah Economic City on Monday.

"It was easy for us to go straight to the European Tour because it's already on the map and we thought this was a good idea to start something.

"But we're not going to stop with one [Tour]. We're in communication with the Asian Tour, we're in communication with the European Tour to have a second [tournament]. I cannot really announce it yet, but I think we will have another one announced very soon.

"We have the Ladies European Tour and, as you know, they merged with the LPGA Tour so hopefully we get to the point where we have a LPGA. 

"And of course, we'd love to have a PGA Tour event. One and half years ago I sat with Ty [Votaw, PGA Tour executive vice president] and had a great conversation on having an idea of putting a PGA Tour event in Saudi Arabia. 

"One of the things we also want to discuss with him is a World Cup of Golf and how we're going to do that in Saudi Arabia if that's possible."

The revealtions by Al Sorour come just one week after Phil Mickelson held talks with Saudi Arabian backers for a proposed new Premier Golf League that plans to feature 48 players in 18 tournaments with a total prize of $240 million.
