The majority of golfers on social media are up in arms today after learning the sport will not be permitted in England when the one-month lockdown tees off this Thursday November 5 through to Wednesday December 2.

UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson confirmed golf will not be exempt from the lockdown rules, despite seeing a petition to keep courses open reach more than 250,000 signatures and strong urgings from England Golf to make a U-turn on the decision.

Taking a quick look on Twitter to see what a number of golfers are saying, and it would appear that the majority are fuming with the decision to ban golf from taking place for the rest of the month, especially given it's one of few sports out there that can easily promote social distancing.

"It's an absolute disgrace to ban golf," said one golf fan. "It is so easy to socially distance on the course, and the health and mental benefits of playing the sport are there for all to see."

Sky Sports Golf's Nick Dougherty tweeted: "Regardless of the outcome, thank you to the people whom are speaking up for what golf can do to help so many in a difficult time."

One golfer tweeted: "Why is golf banned? Just like the last lockdown, golf is banned while people are shoulder to shoulder in parks and on beaches."

Former England cricket legend and TalkSPORT presenter Darren Gough said: "Golf provides exercise while respecting social distancing. It’s totally ridiculous. So I can walk around, but can’t hit shots?!"

Another golf fan tweeted: "So I cant play golf with my wife or someone from another household, yet I can go for for a walk with anybody from another household!"

However, there are still plenty of golf fans out there who believe the decision is the right one.

"Had the hump at first because golf would make lockdown easier for me but I understand why they've done it," said one golfer. "Once you start making exceptions no matter how justified you invite more protest for exemptions. They can’t win on this one."

Former TalkSPORT presenter and passionate golfer Georgie Bingham tweeted: "I’m going to say it, I’m a golfer, I’d love to golf through lockdown but I don’t think it’s a good look for us posh golf twats to be swinging our golf dicks around like we are more important than the rest of the population."

Another golfer tweeted: "I am a golf addict but this decision is morally right as well."

"I also want to play golf," tweeted another golfer, "but while other activities are banned it's not right."
