Golfer makes incredible 411-yard hole-in-one that could be longest ever recorded in England

Matt Vigurs has produced one of the most extraordinary shots of the 2026 golfing season after holing his drive on a 411-yard par-4 at Great Barr Golf Club.

The +1 handicapper was playing in a scratch match when he struck his tee shot towards the green on the 3rd hole. 

After initially assuming his ball had finished short or behind the putting surface, Vigurs was left stunned when he discovered it sitting in the bottom of the cup.

If verified, the ace could be the longest hole-in-one ever recorded in England.

“I had to take two or three looks. I couldn’t believe it,” Vigurs said. “They didn’t believe me till I pulled it out of the hole and we just went mad!”

Vigurs used an oak tree as his target line and played a controlled cut from the tee.

“We all hit good drives and we found three of them down there. Then we were looking for mine,” he explained.

His playing partners’ balls were easy to locate, but Vigurs’ drive was nowhere to be seen. He searched to the left of the fairway, around 50 yards short of the green, before checking behind the putting surface.

With nowhere else to look, he eventually checked the hole – and found his ball.

The achievement caps an extraordinary return to regular golf for the 32-year-old, who only resumed playing consistently in February after spending eight years living abroad.

Vigurs already had three holes-in-one to his name, including two as a junior at Gaudet Luce, before adding another just weeks before his Great Barr heroics. He holed a 6-iron from 191 yards during the Droitwich Club Championships and went on to win the 36-hole stroke-play event in a play-off.

He also claimed the Worcestershire County Championship at Blackwell in June.

“It’s been a good year really,” Vigurs said. “Especially considering I didn’t really pick up a club for eight years when I was living abroad.”

The Great Barr ace came during a particularly memorable day. Vigurs went on to win his match, while Droitwich Golf Club secured promotion by winning the league.

The celebrations continued back at Droitwich.

“It was an expensive one!” Vigurs admitted.

The product and training manager at McLaren has kept the ball and hopes Great Barr Golf Club will help him commemorate the remarkable feat. A framed flag and potentially a plaque at the third hole have already been discussed.

“It would be nice,” he said.

England Golf Championships Director James Crampton summed up the rarity of the achievement.

“We hear of holes-in-one all the time, but a 411-yard one – it’s the stuff of golfers’ dreams!” he said.

Vigurs now has his sights on further success, including the County Match Play and the English Champion of Champions at Woodhall Spa in September.

Whatever happens next, his 2026 season already contains a shot that will be talked about for years – and potentially one that goes down as the longest hole-in-one ever recorded in England.
