The wait is over at Merion, with England’s Jack Whaley and Stanford junior Jay Leng Jr. now battling it out in the 36-hole final of the U.S. Amateur Championship.
Whaley booked his place in the final after a dramatic semi-final victory over Georgia senior Carter Loflin.
The Florida State senior twice built three-hole leads, only to see Loflin fight his way back into the contest.
It ultimately came down to the notorious 18th hole.
Both players found the rough and struggled to reach the green, with Loflin’s approach bouncing over the putting surface and leaving him in a difficult position.
After a short chip and a missed bogey putt, Whaley was left with around five feet for his own bogey.
Despite the pressure, the Englishman held his nerve to hole out and seal his place in the championship match.
"I'm absolutely over the moon," Whaley said afterwards.
Leng took a different route into the final, producing a composed performance to defeat Auburn sophomore Logan Reilly 2&1.
The Stanford player never trailed throughout the match and has now gone 42 consecutive holes without being behind heading into the final.
It was not Leng’s best ball-striking display, with just two birdies on the card, but he remained patient and capitalised when opportunities arose.
A fortunate break against Reilly on the 12th helped him move two up before a birdie on the 15th put him firmly in control.
Both finalists have already secured invitations to next year’s Masters and U.S. Open at Pebble Beach, provided they remain amateurs.
The winner will play in the 155th Open at St Andrews next season.
For Whaley, there is also the chance to make history.
Ranked No. 90 in the World Amateur Golf Ranking, he is attempting to become the first English amateur to win the U.S. Amateur since Matt Fitzpatrick in 2013.
Leng, ranked No. 23, enters the final as the higher-ranked player, but Whaley has already demonstrated plenty of resilience this week.
