Farmer's Insurance Open champion is a PING favourite

What's in Bubba Watson's bag

PING Pro Bubba Watson’s 5-under 67 on Sunday was impressive enough, his 16-under total giving him a one-shot victory at the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines Golf Course in La Jolla, California.

What made his second PGA Tour win all the more compelling was how he did it. There were his trademark long drives (he led the field in average driving distance at 316.6 yards).

But Watson also led in greens in regulation - hitting 81.9% over four rounds - and displaying deftness around the greens as well as making a number of key putts.

The 32-year-old was asked if his victory last year at the Travellers Championship made his win Sunday any easier. “No,” he said. “Every victory is hard because you’ve got a lot of great players chasing you.

“All I thought about was keeping my head down and playing my game and getting all the par 5s, and I did that today.”

Watson indeed birdied all three par 5s in the final round, setting up shorter approaches with his prodigious tee shots with his distinctive pink-shafted G15 driver, including one 363-yarder. He sealed his win on the par-5 18th, which he eagled on Saturday to get within one shot of the lead after 54 holes.

When his second shot into 18 found a greenside bunker, Watson faced an awkward angle to the green, but he blasted out, playing the slippery slope to perfection. When the ball came to rest, he was 12-feet from birdie and a two-shot lead.

After his delicate birdie putt rolled in, Watson offered a hearty fist pump, knowing his closest pursuer would need an eagle on 18 to tie, an attempt that came up short.

Watson also used the new 2011 version of the Titleist ProV1x ball.

"What it looks like it's doing for me is a little bit higher ball flight, but with the same distance and same spin," Watson said in a video on Titleist.com when he made the switch. "I want it to go higher, you want it to be softer on the greens with these new grooves and the way it's been landing on some of these firm greens it's been able to stop a little quicker."
