New research commissioned by club-makers Wilson Staff reveals that most golfers want an iron that helps them hit straighter and longer rather than one that allows them to shape the ball. They also want a sleeker-looking club that’s more forgiving to miss-hits.

Of 2,000 golfers polled, 85 per-cent of those with a handicap upwards of 21 and 77 per-cent of those from 10-20 rated this criteria most important to their game.

As a result, Wilson Staff claims its new Di7 irons - to be launched in London next week by Padraig Harrington and Anthony Wall - will offer mid to high handicap golfers the prospect of hitting more greens in regulation and improving their game substantially.

The new club is seen by Wilson as the ultimate game improvement iron, combining a wide sole and cavity-back clubhead technology with low torque, high performance shafts - a modern version of the ‘Fat Shaft’, which proved so popular almost a decade ago.

Wilson Staff says that tests involving 90 golfers hitting more than 2,250 shots with Di7 irons, plus hundreds of robot strikes comparing other leading brands, revealed that the new clubs had:

*largest sweet spot and carried up to five yards longer than its main rivals

*most forgiveness on shots struck near the toe

*tightest dispersion for off-centre hits

"We believe Di7 irons are the longest and straightest game improvement irons on the market," said Doug Wright, business director of Wilson Golf in Europe. "Research told us exactly what mid to higher handicap players were looking for and after a big investment in product development, exhaustive live and robotic tests all point to a club that delivers and looks the part."

Coupled with a lower and deeper centre of gravity to help hit the ball higher and longer, the new Di7 iron incorporates an exclusive Elastomeric paint coating
in the back cavity, which Wilson Staff claims to ‘dampens vibration by up to a third and delivers a much softer feel’, especially on miss-hits.

The new irons, for right and left-handers, will be available in October in either True Temper TX 105 lightweight steel (£349, 4-iron to sand wedge) or in 72gram UST V2 graphite (£399).
