Irish pay-TV broadcaster Setanta Sports has secured the services of popular Ulsterman, Darren Clarke as brand ambassador for the new Setanta Golf Channel, which launches on Monday (January 8).

The channel will broadcast live footage from the US PGA Tour for the next six years, replacing Sky Sports which has held the UK rights since 1993.

With access to over 40 PGA Tour events annually, including the Players' Championship (moving to a new date of May 10) Setanta Golf will boast a 24-hour viewing schedule.

Leonard Ryan, CEO of Setanta sports, told a launch event at the City Golf and Health Club in London yesterday: “We are privileged to have Darren as our brand ambassador. It promises to be a great year.” Presenter Dominic Holyer will be joined by analysts Ken Brown and Ronan Rafferty who have also signed up.

While not disclosing what new technologies and viewing innovations were planned, officials revealed they were excited about the coverage, claiming it will 'drastically improve viewer enjoyment.'

Clarke plans to become as much part of the broadcasting team as he will US PGA Tour player. “I intend to play a minimum of 15 times on the Tour this year. I’ll also be taking the opportunity to spend more time in the booth, giving insights into how the course is playing and giving an insiders view into professional golf.”
