Golfer shoots record-breaking 57 on Alps Tour

David Carey shot an opening round of 57 during the Cervino Open on the Alps Tour before he went on to win the 54-hole tournament in a playoff.

The Irishman played a faultless round that saw him make 11 birdies in Italy, which gave him a four shot lead after day one. The following two days, Carey shot back-to-back 67's to tie the lead with Italian player Edoardo Lipparelli, but Carey would go on to beat Lipparelli on his home soil in a playoff.

Carey's 57 is one shot lower than Jim Furyk's PGA Tour record of 58, which he made at the 2016 Travelers Championship, while Stephan Jaeger shares that score on the Web.com Tour, along with Ryo Ishikawa who made his 58 on the Japan Golf Tour. Furyk remains the only player ever to shoot two sub-60 rounds on the PGA Tour.

“I did a 57, I won the play-off, things couldn’t be better. Everything together is just perfect," said Carey, summarising his week.

Starting his opening round on the 10th hole, Carey made seven birdies on his opening nine holes, to score a 27 at the turn. Carey kept the birdie train moving with another at the 10th and made three more before settling for a par on his last two holes.

The Guinness World Record for the lowest 18-hole score is held by Australian golfer Rhein Gibson, who shot a 16-under 55 during a round at River Oaks Golf Club in Oklahoma in 2012, although this was not during a compeition on any form of Tour.
