"I said what I said" - Jon Rahm shuts down LIV Golf question ahead of BMW PGA Championship

Jon Rahm says he is yet to become fed up with fielding questions about LIV Golf as he remained tight-lipped on his future. 

LIV's prospects beyond the end of the year are uncertain following the withdrawal of financial backing from Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund (PIF). 

The breakaway tour's season ended early last month and LIV Golf have also laid off the majority of its workforce.

LIV Golf filed for bankruptcy last week and it's understood that securing fresh investment hinges on restructuring its costly player contracts and retaining at least half of its key players.

Rahm told reporters on Tuesday ahead of the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth that little has changed since he told media at last week's Irish Open that he has become "pretty good at dealing with turbulence". 

"Well, there's a long legal process they have to go through before a lot of things fall into place," Rahm said when asked what would have to change for him to leave LIV. 

"I really can't give you an answer right now."

Asked if Rahm has an agreement with LIV Golf 2.0, he added: "I said what I said."

Should LIV Golf survive it is expected the league's schedule will be reduced to 10 events, down from 14, with significantly smaller prize purses. 

To appease the sport's global rankings body, there are rumours LIV will increase field sizes to around 90 players, introduce a 36-hole cut and even hold Monday qualifiers. 

LIV is also expected to reduce the number of teams from 13 to 10. 

Rahm has been the team captain of Legion XIII since he joined LIV in December 2023. 

The 31-year-old and two of his teammates, Tyrrell Hatton and Tom McKibbin, fuelled speculation they were done with LIV with a pair of conspicuous walk-up songs at the circuit's season finale in Indianapolis.

Hatton chose Queen's "I Want to Break Free" for his entrance at the party hole whilst McKibbin then appeared to pile on, selecting "Breaking Free" from High School Musical.

The two-time major champion said, unlike Bryson DeChambeau, he has not been involved in pitching changes.

"I think some players have had more involvement than others," he said. 

"I think some people have wanted to be more involved than others. 

"If there's anything I've learned the last, I would say, five, six years, it's that I don't know if I'm meant to be involved in the politics of this game. 

"I don't think I'm suited for that line of work.

"Luckily I'm good at hitting a golf ball, and I think that's what I should be sticking to. 

"But I haven't really been involved in that. Some players have. Obviously we all know Bryson has been quite involved."

Ryder Cup preparation

Rahm arrives at the DP World Tour's flagship event 24 hours after taking a reconnaissance trip to Adare Manor with his European Ryder Cup teammates. 

Captain Luke Donald took 16 players to County Limerick. 

Rory McIlroy and Rasmus Hojgaard were the only absentees from the 2025 team that defeated the United States at Bethpage Black. 

Rahm said the golfers just played 18 holes and had a quick dinner before travelling to Wentworth. 

"Any time I'm asked to go to Adare Manor, I'm going to go happily and willingly," said Rahm. 

"It's one of the best hotel golf course experiences there is in the world. It was a lot of fun. 

"Obviously some Ryder Cup members, some possible prospects for the Ryder Cup. It was very enjoyable.

"I think those days are great for all of us to see each other and just in a way remember why we do what we do. 

"But for people that have never been involved in anything Ryder Cup related, I think it's great to get a little bit of an example of what things may look like and what things may be like."

Rahm said he's not concerned with the uncertainty over his 2027 schedule and believes he will have plenty of chances to impress Donald. 

Rahm explained that he believes the most impressive thing about the Englishman since he took over the captaincy is his level of calmness.

"Every moment of every day, he looks cool, collected, and under control," said Rahm.

"I know myself in that situation would be very far from that. 

"So I know I'm nowhere ready to be a Ryder Cup captain. 

"Hopefully in the future I will be, but not right now. It's truly inspiring.

"He keeps working as hard as he did for that first Ryder Cup, and I think with the experience of knowing what to expect, he can work different angles. 

"It also comes with challenges, right? He's been so successful, he needs to find a way to inspire all of us and get the messaging across as good as he has right now.

"So as good as he has been, he's still determined to obviously keep his captaincy at the level he has so far.

"Again, I think the best way to describe it is inspiring because he truly is incredible at it."
