The 2023 AIG Women's Open at Walton Heath is set to hand out record prize money.

In 2022 the total prize fund was set at $7.3m as Ashleigh Buhai claimed her maiden major, collecting a little more than $1m for her efforts.

But for this week at Walton Heath, the prize fund has been raised to $9m, with $1.35m going to the winner.

That's an increase of 23%.

R&A CEO Martin Slumbers said:

"I'm very pleased to let you know that for this week's championship, together with AIG, we are raising the total prize fund to $9 million which is a 23 per cent increase on the 2022 7.3 million with the champion earning 1.35 million come Sunday evening."

Prize money of the Women's Open has grown considerably since AIG partnered with the R&A.

Some 125%since 2018, in fact.

There is still a considerable gap between genders, though.

Brian Harman scooped a $3m winner's cheque from the $16m prize purse as he claimed the 2023 Open at Royal Liverpool.

Hyoo Joo Kim is the tournament favourite alongside American Nelly Korda, who recently returned to the top spot in the OWGR.

Celine Boutier, Minjee Lee and Rose Zhang are also expected to do well
