Rory McIlroy's putting coach Brad Faxon has addressed the Northern Irishman's critics, saying it is 'beyond reproach' to question what drives him.

McIlroy, 34, is taking a break from the game after another exhausting - and winless - season in the majors.

The Ulsterman had a disastrous Masters when many predicted he would finally win the grand slam.

"It sucked. It sucked," McIlroy later said, breaking his silence weeks after another forgetful year at Augusta National, missing the cut in Georgia for only the second time in his career after rounds of 72 and 77.

More:

He dusted himself down and posted a T7 at the PGA Championship as Brooks Koepka put five on it before coming up agonisingly short once again at the U.S. Open.

"I would go through 100 Sundays like this to get my hands on another major championship," he told reporters at Los Angeles Country Club.

And Brian Harman was simply too good for everyone at Royal Liverpool.

Faxon has now fiercely defended McIlroy.

He told Golf Today:

"He didn't have a great putting couple of days but he had a great final round and a great putting week.
"And you know, when Rory McIlroy finishes fifth in a major, tied for sixth in a major, the world is going to end according to some of the media.
"The guy is a hell of a player. He hasn't finished out of the top 10 in a tournament it seems like the last seven events. He's played very well in majors except for the Masters this year."

Brad Faxon goes after (!) Rory McIlroy's critics:

He continued:

"It bugs me to no end, and what particularly bugs me, and I hope whoever posted this one is listening now, because when other instructors want to criticize Rory's stroke or Rory or potentially me, when they don't know anything about how a player thinks and what motivates them, what drives them, it's beyond reproach."

Faxon said McIlroy's second place score at LACC would have been enough to have won 'a lot of other US Opens'.

He added:

"Sometimes those things get stolen away from a player and Rory really didn't have to hang his head on anything there and this is going to make him come out even stronger and better in my opinion."
