Five PGA Tour professionals were deemed to be using non-conforming drivers prior to the start of last week's Safeway Open in California, according to Reuters.

The report - which received information from two equipment insiders - claims Corey Conners, Robert Streb, Michael Thompson, Mark Hubbard and Jason Dufner failed the first driver test of the new season, of which Titleist, TaylorMade and Cobra were three of the major driver brands in question.

The five players in question have now reportedly questioned the accuracy of the PGA Tour's driver testing process, and have sent their drivers back to their manufacturers to be re-tested.

In order to compete in the Safeway Open last week, the five players were forced to use replacement clubs.

The failed driver test did little to affect Conners and Hubbard, however, with the pair finishing tied 13th on 10-under par.

Thompson finished tied 23rd on 8-under par, but Dufner and Streb both missed the cut.

According to the report, 30 drivers were randomly tested prior to the start of the tournament.

In partnership with the USGA, the PGA Tour designed its new club-testing program due to drivers, over time, increasing beyond the Characteristic Time (CT) that measures the spring-like effect of a clubface.

Player's bags are now being inspected at various, unannounced tournaments throughout the PGA Tour season but only on practice days.

Once a player has been selected, they hand their driver over to a PGA Tour official who then brings it in for testing.

From there, a player is given a red, yellow or green light as to whether or not their driver is conforming to the rules of golf.
