PGA Tour rookie accused of SPITTING on Tony Romo's golf ball

PGA Tour rookie Kristoffer Ventura took to social media to defend himself at the weekend after being accused of spitting on former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo's golf ball during the second round of the Safeway Open.

Ventura was putting out for par on the 16th hole, shortly before Romo, in the group behind, smashed his 3-wood from outside of 275 yards onto the green and within a couple of feet of the rookie's ball.

Romo, who is still an amateur, was seemingly either unaware of his strength or just didn't realise the threeball of Ventura, Dominic Bozzelli and Hank Lebioda were still on the green.

But that's when things started to really get interesting.

Ventura took one look at Romo's ball and carried on without a care in the world, clearly stepping on Romo's line as he drained his three-footer for par.

While that in itself caused many golf fans to move onto the edge of their seat, Ventura - in the eyes of numerous golf fans on Twitter - appeared to spit on Romo's golf ball moments after plucking his ball out of the cup.

Anyway, here's the video footage so you can make your own mind up...

Ventura has since cleared up the accusation, stating on Twitter: "I defeinitely did not spit here. I moved my head to see if I had left any spike marks because I knew I was close to his line, hate to disappoint you guys."

Romo missed the cut on 4-over par, while Ventura went on to make the cut but finish in a tie for 62nd on level par.

Cameron Champ bounced back to form by winning the tournament by one stroke over Adam Hadwin on 17-under par.
