LIV Golf's Cameron Smith is planning a shock return on site at this week's Players Championship at TPC Sawgrass.

Smith narrowly won this flagship PGA Tour event by one shot 12 months ago shortly before going on to win the 150th Open.

The Australian then decided to accept a huge fee to join LIV Golf, meaning he is no longer eligible to compete on the PGA Tour.

That fee was reportedly north of $100m

But while Smith is not able to return to defend his title at the Players Championship this week, he has told GOLF that he may very well head down to watch some of the action.

WATCH THE INTERVIEW HERE:

The reporter asked Smith:

"The Players Championship, will you be watching? What will you be doing that week?"

Smith replied:

"I'm a little bit unsure you know, that's where I live now so I don't know, I'll definitely be watching on TV.
"I think it's a great event to watch. I grew up my whole childhood watching the event and yeah I'd love to get out there.
"I don't know how it would kind of be received but getting out there and watching, walking around in the crowd might be pretty funny."

The reporter then said:

You should do that, maybe even do a little heckling?

Smith laughed:

"I don't know if I could do heckling."

We don't know about you, but that last comment had us instantly running to this classic clip from Happy Gilmore:

The popular Flushing It account tweeted: "You’ve got to love this guy, he literally gives no s**ts. He should try and get into the players meeting!"
