Spencer Levin caught the attention of golf fans earlier in the week during his preparation for the Shriners Children's Open on the PGA Tour

The 38-year-old golf pro has a remarkably similar putting stroke to Happy Gilmore, the character played by Adam Sandler in the 1996 comedy.

Speaking earlier in the week about his approach to the flat stick, he told the PGA Tour: "I just heard somebody else saying it when somebody else was using it.

"Like, when a buddy of mine was grabbing it [the putter], another guy came up and he goes, 'What's up? Happy Gilmore.'

"I just wasn't putting every good. And then I was kind of fooling around with, like, a split-grip on a normal putter.

"And then I remembered that my old man had this putter in his garage where it was kind of designed the way I'm doing it."

He continued: "And I just grabbed it and then, yeah, I just borrowed it and the first day I used it, I putted great and I've been using it since.

"It's just so much different than a normal putter for me."

Levin claimed the first time he used it he made 11 birdies in one round. He's never looked back.

Tom Hoge claimed the early lead at TPC Summerlin with a superb opening round of 63.

As for Levin, he has some work to do to make the cut.

Unfortunately it was the flat stick that was really letting him down. Despite hitting 88.8 per cent of greens in regulation, he ranked dead last in the Strokes Gained: Putting statistics department.

Levin lost as many as -4.258 strokes to the rest of the field!

It was during this round that we saw Sungjae Im play one of the most incredible recovery shots on the PGA Tour in quite some time.
