Former US Open champion Gary Woodland has announced on social media that he will undergo brain surgery on September 18.

Woodland, 39, is scheduled to have an operation that will remove a lesion found on his brain.

The four-time PGA Tour winner and 2019 US Open champion took to social media to reveal the news on Wednesday morning.

Woodland said: "I'm in good spirits with my family and team by my side and so thankful for the love and support of everyone."

Here's Woodland's full social media post:

"I wanted to share a recent health development with you.
"On Sept. 18th I'll be having surgery to remove a lesion found on my brain.
"I was diagnosed a few months ago and have been trying to treat symptoms with medication.
"After consulting with multiple specialists and discussing with my family, we've made the decision that surgery to remove the lesion is the best course of action.
"I'm in good spirits with my family and team by my side and so thankful for the love and support of everyone."

Woodland is currently ranked 73rd in the world.

The American played in 24 events on the PGA Tour this season, finishing in the top 10 on two occasions with ties for ninth at the Genesis Invitational and Houston Open. Woodland missed out on competing in the FedEx Cup Playoffs after finishing 93rd on the list.

Earlier this season, Woodland had been rumoured to be considering a switch to join Brooks Koepka's Smash GC on the LIV Golf League.

We wish Gary Woodland all the very best with his operation and recovery.
