Phil Mickelson finished bottom of the leaderboard on day one of The American Express after carding a disastrous 6-over 78 - on a day where a video of him crushing his mini driver out of a fairway bunker went viral on social media.
Mickelson, who was playing the easier La Quinta Country Club in the three-course rota, made a number of costly errors in his opening round none bigger than taking a nine on the par-4 8th hole.
Lefty found the water hazard twice off the tee and it would lead to a shocking quintuple-bogey nine to just about end any chance he had of making the cut this week.
He did make an eagle on the par-5 13th but that was about the only highlight of his day.
Now looking on from the bottom of the leaderboard, it will take a monumental effort for golf's oldest major champion to make the cut this week as he trails the lead by some 16 shots after the first 18 holes.
The cut is made on Saturday night though, so Mickelson still has two rounds to put it right.
Aside from his disappointing first round, a video of Mickelson doing something only Mickelson could do has gone viral on Instagram video today.
