Since the start of the Titleist Speed Project, Titleist engineers have put greater emphasis on aerodynamics as being one of the most essential components in increasing clubhead speed.

This is certainly true with the new TSR drivers release in 2022, comprising TSR2, TSR3 and TSR4, of which the latter prominently features in our best golf drivers guide.

GolfMagic Equipment Editor Alex Lodge was recently fitted into the Titleist TSR4 Driver.

The 'R' in TSR stands for 'Refined', in case you were wondering what the difference was to the previous TSi, which stands for 'Titleist Speed Impact'.

Now although Titleist has made small changes, they offer significant improvements as part of a process which has refined the previous TSi models.

Other brands such as Callaway and TaylorMade have also focused on marginal gains with their latest releases.

Our very own Alex reviewed each of the new Titleist TSR models at Woburn Golf's Performance Centre.

Player Level

The three Titleist TSR Driver models cover the abilities, ages and performances of every golfer. The TSR2 and TSR4 models suit mid-to-low and high handicappers, but the TSR3 Driver appears to benefit the performance of better players.

Titleist TSR Drivers - Looks and Feel

The TSR2 Driver is hugely improved from the TSi2 in terms of aerodynamics.

This driver is much more streamlined due to some subtle differences in the design, and it features a new Multi-Plateau VFT Face.

The TSR2 has a high MOI and it has been constructed to maximise distance, but it also has a player profile which likely excite the mid-to-low handicap golfer.

It also has a redesigned toe, which looks much better as it improves the face angle at address.

The TSR3 Driver is designed for better players, and that is evident in its design.

Alex found this to be the most interesting of the three drivers.

The club head of the TSR3 is compact and in similar ways to the TSR2, it has been made more streamlined. This driver has a Speed Ring design in the clubface, which helps to maximize that ball speed for you.

The concept of improved aerodynamics is consistent in the TSR3 model too and it has a refined CG track system. This, according to Titleist, helps to improve ball striking across the face and helps straighten you up on off-centre hits.

And finally onto the TSR4 Driver, which Alex was ultimately custom fit for as it best suited his game.

Similar in design to the TSR2, the TSR4 Driver has a new Multi-Plateau VFT Face, which helps to produce consistent ball speeds across the face.

It also possesses two adjustable weights. The regular setting allows for less spin, but this can be adjusted to suit your game.

The sound and feel at impact on all three drivers really impressed Alex. The acoustics of Titleist TSR Drivers in particular are as a good as any on the market.

One potential slight niggle for interested punters could be the shiny look of the crown.

That is very much a personal preference at the end of the day though, but we have to admit we do prefer something with more of a matte black finish that mutes sunlight on the crown at address.

Titleist TSR Drivers - Performance and Forgiveness

Alex tested all three of the TSR Drivers, but it was the TSR4 that he fell in love with during his custom fitting session.

Alex found the TSR4 Driver to not only be very long, but also extremely forgiving, giving him the best of both worlds for his long driving exploits off the tee.

It was the ball speed consistency that excelled most for Alex when it came to the TSR4 Driver.

The TSR2 certainly produced consistent ball speeds and accurate shots even with off-centre hits, but there was just a little more on offer with the TSR4.

Alex noted some nice straight shots on the whole, but it launched just a little too high for Alex to consider putting in his bag.

As for the TSR3, Alex found there wasn't a great deal of difference between the older TSi3 Driver, which was one of the most popular drivers on the PGA Tour last season.

Alex did really enjoy hitting the TSR3, but he felt the ball speed consistency was just that little bit stronger with the TSR4.

Overall though, a long, forgiving driver, and we certainly would not put anyone off taking a closer look at this one.

All three TSR models produced ball speeds of at least 180 mph and a solid dispersion across a lot of shots.

Although the gains in ball speed consistency and accuracy are marginal, these improvements are a result of this release which is aimed at refinement.

But as we always say when it comes to your golf clubs, it is vital you opt for a custom fitting if you really want to lower your scores.

Titleist insists that you go through custom-fitting in order to find the right driver for you.

This is particularly important when a new range containing three fresh designs is released.

Should you buy one of the Titleist TSR Drivers?

The new Titleist TSR Drivers are very impressive, and we would certainly encourage players of all abilities to take a closer look at the TSR2 and TSR4 Drivers.

We recommend only better players consider taking a look at the TSR3, but as we always say, head to Titleist for a custom fitting session and see which one works best for you. We all swing it differently at the end of the day, so what is right for us (TSR4) might not be right for you.

Another reason to get custom fit, especially with these drivers, is because they cost well over £500, which seems to be the norm these days for a premium golf driver.

The TSR4 Driver featured prominently in our latest Best Golf Drivers test, but it narrowly missed out on a podium finish as we consider there are several better options on the market in 2023.
