ROME - Patrick Cantlay refused to answer whether competitors in the Ryder Cup should be paid after the American was widely mocked on day two at the Marco Simone Golf & Country Club.

In an enthralling finish, Cantlay played like a man possessed as he and Wyndham Clark defeated Rory McIlroy and Matthew Fitzpatrick 1UP in the anchor match of the Saturday afternoon fourballs.

The point meant that Team USA trail Team Europe by five points going into the Sunday singles.

Before the match reports surfaced Cantlay was leading a rift in the Team USA locker room.

Sky Sports Jamie Weir reported that Cantlay was upset at players not getting paid to compete at the Ryder Cup and was not wearing one as a result.

The report has been denied by Cantlay's people and by the man himself.

"It's just about Team USA and representing our country," Cantlay said in response to Weir's question.

Asked again, Cantlay said:  That's all I've got to say about that.

He added:

"The hat doesn't fit. It didn't fit at Whistling Straits, and didn't fit this week. Everyone knows that. I was going to go no hat all week regardless, so I figured would I keep it consistent."

In a tense moment, Max Homa later brought the comedy.

Team USA have been struggling with illness this week, captain Zach Johnson said after his side trailed by five points after day one.

A reporter asked an open question to Cantlay, Sam Burns, Brian Harman, Wyndham Clark, Max Homa, Collin Morikawa: "To anybody that wants to answer, last night your captain said that you all were not well, and this morning was not the same and this afternoon you're staying healthy."

Homa joked: "I think we're all just sick of Pat not wearing a hat."
