The Open Championship at Royal Portrush is well underway.

Several surprise names made their way to the top of the leaderboard on day one in Northern Ireland.

England's Matthew Fitzpatrick rediscovered some form and was among a host of players to card 4-under 67s.

That group included Denmark's Jacob Skov Olesen, China's Haotong Li and South Africa's ChristiaanBezuidenhout.

American duo Harris English and Lucas Glover, along with England's Matthew Jordan, also started the 153rd Open in fine fashion.

World No.1 and pre-tournament favourite Scottie Scheffler is nicely positioned. Masters champion Rory McIlroy did well to hold on after his round threatened to unravel down the stretch.

Meanwhile, there are several big names that will need to make a move in round two if they want to play the weekend.

Let's take a look...

Bryson DeChambeau

First round score: 78 (+7)

Once again the content king is struggling at an Open Championship.

DeChambeau told reporters at the beginning of the week he believes he has struggled with links golf because he grew up in California. Work to do.

Patrick Reed

First round score: 77 (+6)

Reed came into The Open with hopes he could lift the Claret Jug and secure his spot in the 2025 US Ryder Cup team.

The former PGA Tour pro turned LIV Golf recruit needs a huge performance on Friday.

Wyndham Clark

First round score: 76 (+5)

Has been struggling with his game for some time. News broke on the eve of the major that the golfer has been banned from Oakmont following his outburst of anger at the US Open.

It followed several poor performances.

A frustrated Clark damaged a century-old locker after he missed the cut in the third men's major of the year and it looks like he'll be making a swift exit from The Open unless he can find some birdies.

Collin Morikawa

First round score: 75 (+4)

Former Open winner Morikawa has been off the boil for the last few months.

He sacked his long-time caddie, JJ Jakovac, in April and replaced him with Max Homa's former looper Joe Greiner.

That partnership only last six events so Morikawa turned to Billy Foster for The Open.

Morikawa just did not play to the standard we know he is capable of in round one.

Will he turn things around?

Brooks Koepka:

First round score: 75 (+4)

Koepka is showing absolutely no sign of turning around his miserable 2025 major season.

The five-time major winner missed cuts at The Masters, PGA Championship and the US Open.

What's going on?!

Ryan Fox

First round score: 75 (+4)

Was tipped as a dark horse by many to contend for the Claret Jug given he is now a PGA Tour winner and enjoys links golf.

The Kiwi is a former Alfred Dunhill Links champion.

Patrick Cantlay

First round score: 73 (+2)

Not a disastrous round for the pantomime villain of the 2023 Ryder Cup, but he will need to be on his game tomorrow.

Hideki Matsuyama

First round score: 74 (+3)

Has only managed one top-10 performance in his Open career since making his debut in 2013.

It's easy to see why...

Dustin Johnson

First round score: 73 (+2)

Was one of the last men on the range on Wednesday evening which sent alarm bells ringing.

There's no denying DJ has struggled in the majors since he decamped to LIV and he has every chance of making the cut here but will need to make sure he plays sensibly.

Jason Day

First round score: 73 (+2)

It could easily go very wrong from here.

Tommy Fleetwood

First round score: 73 (+2)

You'd expect Tommy Fleetwood to make it through but he wasn't on his A game in round one.

Apart from Shane Lowry and Rory McIlroy, you'd be hard pressed to find a more popular Claret Jug winner.

Ludvig Aberg

First round score: 73 (+2)

Many people believed the young Swede was going to win a major championship this year but the European Ryder Cup star has not become the force we expected him to be in 2025.

Viktor Hovland

First round score: 73 (+2)

You'd bank on the Norwegian making it through but Open Championship golf can be cruel at times.

Jordan Spieth

First round score: 73 (+2)

Had four weeks off because of an injury and the birth of this third child.

Will Spieth manage not to blow up?
