Dame Laura Davies makes her Solheim Cup prediction and names her exact score

Dame Laura Davies has backed Europe to reclaim the Solheim Cup this week — but believes the contest could go right down to the wire.

Great Britain’s most successful female golfer sat down with GolfMagic’s Georgina Black for the latest episode of Her Game, with the record 45-time Ladies European Tour winner reflecting on her remarkable career, her Solheim Cup memories and the changing landscape of women’s golf.

Davies, who played in the inaugural Solheim Cup in 1990 and went on to make 12 appearances in the competition, believes the biennial contest has developed into one of the greatest events in sport.

“We used to call it our Ryder Cup,” Davies said. “Now it's most certainly the Solheim Cup and it's grown into an absolute juggernaut of an event.

“I think it's one of the best sporting events every two years without a doubt, in any sport.”

Davies, 62, also revealed to us that the nerves never disappeared throughout her 12 Solheim Cup appearances — even during her final outing, when Europe famously fought back to beat the United States in Ireland.

“The nerves were still there to the very last one,” Davies admitted.

“Any of these players that aren't nervous, I don't think they'll win a point… you have to have the nerves or else you've got nothing.”

Davies also opened up on what made the Solheim Cup so special during her illustrious career, insisting that her greatest memories came from representing Europe rather than from her four major championship victories.

“I've always said the greatest moments of my career have been in Solheim Cup,” she said. “I'm sticking with that.”

Away from the Solheim Cup, Davies discussed the evolution of women’s golf, her decision to step away from competitive golf and her transition into broadcasting.

Having turned professional in 1985, Davies has witnessed enormous changes in the women's game.

While she believes the modern generation are receiving the rewards they deserve, she would like to see further growth on the Ladies European Tour.

“If I had one wish, it would be really good prize money on the LET,” Davies said.

“I'd love to see these top European girls playing and being able to play more in Europe.”

And what about this week's Solheim Cup?

Davies is backing Europe to prevail 14½-13½, with home advantage in the Netherlands potentially proving decisive.

“I do think the home advantage gives us just enough to get across the line,” she predicted.
