The R&A has today announced a shake-up to the 2028 golf calendar, confirming that The Open, the ISPS HANDA Senior Open and the AIG Women’s Open will all move to later dates to steer clear of the Los Angeles Olympic Games.

With Olympic golf scheduled for 19–29 July 2028, the R&A has pushed its trio of major championships back for that year only, ensuring the sport’s biggest events don’t collide.

The golf competitions for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics (LA28), will be held at Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades, California, a renowned course that has hosted numerous major championships and the PGA Tour's annual Genesis Invitational hosted by Tiger Woods

LA28 is scheduled to welcome two individual strokeplay tournaments as normal for both men and women, as well as new 36-hole team event consisting of foursomes and fourball.

Golf is one of six sports - joining archery, athletics (4x100m mixed relay), gymnastics, rowing coastal beach sprint and table tennis - to add a mixed-gender competition for LA 2028.

R&A confirms revised 2028 Championship Dates

  • The 156th Open: 30 July – 6 August 2028
  • ISPS HANDA Senior Open: 7 – 13 August 2028
  • AIG Women’s Open: 14 – 20 August 2028

Explaining the decision to shift the dates around, R&A Chief Executive Mark Darbon said:

“We have worked collaboratively with the relevant bodies and our partners to agree alternative dates for staging our major championships in 2028 to accommodate the Olympic golf competitions.

“We appreciate the constructive discussions we have had with all of the stakeholders and believe that providing clarity on the dates now will assist with the planning of the global golf calendar in 2028. We can also confirm that The Open will be returning to its normal mid-July dates in 2029.”

Venues for all three championships will be announced in due course.

As for where The Open will land in 2028, nothing is locked in yet — but the rumour mill is already turning.

Royal Lytham & St Annes and Muirfield are believed to be front-runners, while Portmarnock remains an exciting outside contender.

Trump Turnberry, meanwhile, continues to face logistical challenges that could keep it out of the running, but it's certainly in the mix too.
