Max Greyserman fired an 8-under 63 to open up a four-shot lead at the halfway stage of the Baycurrent Classic in Japan.
Conditions on day two at the Yokohama Country Club were much calmer as the high winds caused by Typhoon Halong relented, and that was reflected in the scoring throughout the field.
Greyserman carded an eagle and six birdies to hit the front on 12-under par, and his score was matched by Ryder Cup star Xander Schauffele, who enjoyed a run of five birdies in six holes on the outward nine.
Schauffele also birdied the final two holes to close on 8-under along with Alex Smalley (65) and in-form Swede Alex Noren, who fired a six-birdie 65.
"Yesterday felt like you were just trying to survive the round and at some points it felt like there was almost no wind today," said Schauffele.
"The greens were rolling pretty nice and the wind was down. If you're hitting good shots, you were getting rewarded for them, so I was able to take advantage of a lot of that.
"It was nice to get off to a good start and then finish pretty strong. I was pretty content with yesterday just trying to survive. Crazy to play this course in two completely different ways."
Noren concurred with Schauffele and felt that his opening 69 in Thursday's "brutal" conditions was probably a better round of golf than his 65 on day two.
"Yesterday it was brutal to try to get everything right, but also some tee shots were easier," said Noren, twice a winner on the DP World Tour this season at the British Masters and the flagship BMW PGA Championship.
"When you get up there you get so much help from the wind, but today was way easier hitting into the greens. Yesterday off the tee maybe wasn't as tough as you would think, but into the greens was very difficult yesterday. So yeah, happy with both days."
Sahith Theegala and Si Woo Kim (64) are in contention on 7-under, with last week's Sanderson Farms Championship winner Garrick Higgo a further shot behind.
But former Masters champion Adam Scott was unable to take advantage of the calmer conditions, returning a disappointing 1-over 72 to slip to 2-under par.
