Charlie Woods got off to a rough start at the Junior PGA Championship on Thursday.
Charlie Woods is facing a battle to make the cut at the Junior PGA Championship.
The 17-year-old son of Tiger Woods shot a 3-over 75 on Tuesday at Fields Ranch East in Frisco, Texas.
After the opening round, Charlie sits seven strokes off the lead in a tie for 53rd.
The top 60 and ties in the 156-player field will advance to the weekend.
Charlie made bogey on the 1st and 4th holes before making his first birdie day at the 7th.
After making the turn in 39, Charlie made birdies at 15 and 18 but dropped shots at the 14th and 16th.
Charlie finished in a share of ninth at this tournament last year.
He heads into this event off the back of his best ever performance at the U.S. Junior Amateur.
Last week, Charlie shot rounds of 76 and 70 at Saucon Valley Country Club.
It left him in a position to qualify for match play portion of the tournament, but he was eliminated in a play-off for the final two spots.
Charlie's hopes of advancing ended in dramatic fashion when a spectator's phone went off during his backswing on the play-off hole.
The distraction came as Charlie attempted a chip shot after missing the green with his approach.
He reacted in frustration after the shot, turning toward the spectator and saying: "Really, dude?"
Charlie's good friend, Miles Russell, stormed to the final but was stunned by Noah Maclauchlan in the championship match, losing 6&5.
Charlie took to Instagram on Monday to address his performance at the U.S. Junior Amateur.
He opted to ignore the controversial moment, writing: "Couple of great weeks playing two incredible championships.
"Always enjoy getting back to Pinehurst for the North & South Amateur.
"Thanks to everyone there for another great tournament.
"Really grateful for the opportunity to play in my third U.S. Junior Amateur Championship.
"Thanks to the USGA and everyone at Saucon Valley Country Club for an incredible championship.
"Looking forward to teeing it up at the Junior PGA Championship this week!"
