PGA Tour officially replaces Rocket Classic with new 2027 tournament

The PGA Tour has officially replaced the Rocket Classic after confirming a new tournament will join the 2027 schedule.

Insurance company Sompo has been announced as the title sponsor of the new event, which will be held at Silverado Resort's North Course in Napa, California, from 29 July 29 to 1 August 1 2027.

The announcement confirms that Detroit will lose its PGA Tour spot for at least one season after Rocket Companies decided to end its title sponsorship following this week's staging of the 2026 Rocket Classic at Detroit Golf Club.

This week's tournament will mark the eighth and final edition of the Rocket Classic, with Cameron Young leading the betting ahead of a field that includes Xander Schauffele, Patrick Cantlay, Russell Henley, Chris Gotterup and rising star Jackson Koivun.

Despite losing the event, the PGA Tour has reiterated its desire to return to Detroit or the surrounding Metro Detroit area in the future. 

However, the earliest possible comeback would likely be 2028, when the Tour introduces its new Championship Series structure.

Any future Detroit event would require a suitable venue and a major sponsor willing to commit significant investment, particularly if it becomes part of the Tour's top-tier Championship Series.

The departure of the Rocket Classic leaves Michigan without a PGA Tour event for the first time since the Buick Open ended in 2009. 

The state eventually returned to the schedule in 2019 when Dan Gilbert helped bring professional golf back to Detroit.

The new Sompo-backed tournament will also play a role in the PGA Tour's evolving schedule model. 

From 2028, the Tour will split its calendar into a Championship Series featuring 23 to 24 of its biggest events, and a Challenger Series designed to provide opportunities for emerging players.

Sompo will remain involved beyond the 2027 debut, although the tournament will move away from Silverado after its first season, with a new host venue yet to be announced.

Silverado has a strong PGA Tour history, having hosted events from 1968 to 1980 before returning to the calendar between 2014 and 2025. 

Scottie Scheffler won the Procore Championship there in 2024, while Max Homa claimed back-to-back victories in 2021 and 2022.

The announcement comes shortly after the Travelers Championship was confirmed as the first Championship Series event for the 2028 PGA Tour schedule.
